About this event

Stargazing Live at Orphanage Park

Join us for a magical evening under the stars at Orphanage Park in Millswood. This in-person event will be a delightful opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky and to participate in International Observe the Moon Night. Whether you're an Astronomy enthusiast or simply curious, this event promises an unforgettable experience.

NOTE: This is a private event exclusively for members of the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Society (AHARS).

WHAT YOU WILL SEE: The stargazing event will include both Visual Observing with optical telescopes that you will be able to look through, as well as Electronic Observing using an advanced imaging telescope with imagery projected onto a large screen. Expert commentary will accompany the live images as they displayed.

The optical telescopes will provide spectacular views throughout the night of craters and mountains on the Moon and the awesome rings of Saturn. Saturday 21 October 2023 is also International Observe the Moon Night -- a global event held around the world.

Once the skies darken, the imaging telescope will be used to provide views of much fainter and distant celestial objects in our galaxy, The Milky Way, as well as other galaxies in the Universe -- millions or billions of light years away. Deep sky objects you can expect to see:

  • wispy nebulae where stars are born,
  • sparkling star clusters composed of hundreds or millions of stars,
  • gas and dust clouds ejected by unstable stars,
  • supernova remnants from catastrophic stellar events,
  • galaxies millions or billions of light years away, and
  • a current supernova (stellar explosion) in a distant galaxy.

PAYMENT: After booking your tickets make a direct deposit of $5 per person to the AHARS’ account entering your callsign in the comments.
