Fibershed is a non-profit educational and research organization that develops regenerative textile systems that are based on carbon farming, regional manufacturing, and public education.We envision the emergence of an international system of regional textile communities that enliven connection and ownership of ‘soil-to-soil’ textile processes. These diverse textile cultures are designed to build soil carbon stocks on the working landscapes on which they depend, while directly enhancing the strength of regional economies. Both fiber and food systems now face a drastically changing climate, and must utilize the best of time-honored knowledge and available science for their long-term ability to thrive.

Join us at Fibershed, on October 7, as we close the indigo season with a fresh-leaf-indigo community dye bath!

Fibershed Learning Center

Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center, for a community dye bath with the last of this season&#x27;s fresh-leaf indigo! Have a look in your closet for old pale protein fibers (ivory, white, gray, yellow) found in -- your old wool hat or gloves, old silk ties, an old silk scarf or handkerchief, or your skein of wool yarn. Together, we will hand-pick fresh leaf indigo and make a cold indigo dye bath for protein fibers. Everyone will go home with newly dyed materials and you will learn how to make your own cold indigo bath at home. There will also be information on how/where to source your indigo plants for spring 2024.List of fibers that will work with this indigo process: alpaca, angora, cashmere, llama, mohair, silk, vicuna, wool, etc. (any animal-based fiber)What to bring: Please bring personal snacks, lunch, and your water bottle (a selection of teas will be served). Fresh indigo leaves will be provided, and you are encouraged to look through your closet for old silk scarves, wool hats, wool mittens, wool scarfs or vests, handkerchiefs, etc. We ask that people limit items to 3-4 lightweight items per person (but bring a few extras in case there&#x27;s extra dye!). Tip: Most secondhand shops have old silk handkerchiefs, wool skeins, and scarves which are light and perfect for dyeing! If you have a portable and clean blender we can borrow for the event, please bring it (no salts or mordants will be necessary in this process). If you bring wool thread, make sure you unwind it into a skein first so it can be dipped. We will have a soapy bath for cleaning protein fibers when you arrive but pre-washing your fibers is best! We will also discuss how to take care of your naturally dyed goods.Youth participants are welcome (see youth ticket) so long as they are accompanied by their parent/guardian during the event. Please note this process will not work with cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, hemp, etc.) but stay tuned for other events that will focus on cellulose (plant-based) fibers.Suggestions for where to source a variety of secondhand silk, wool, and other protein fibers: The Legacy Thriftstore (Santa Rosa), Through the Decades (San Francisco), and other local thrift stores, your local yarn shop, garage sales. Climate beneficial wool made by Fibershed producers will also be available for sale.

Instructors:You will be guided through the process by Fibershed staff members: Sari Monroy Solis who is a fiber artist, natural dyer, weaver, embroiderer, and teacher of heritage Mayan fiber arts at Fibershed and Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA), and by Heather Podoll who processes all of Fibershed's indigo (persicaria tinctoria), from leaf to pigment. Heather is an avid knitter and is delighted to bring together her background in ecological research and agricultural systems with a holistic and local perspective on fiber arts and textile systems.

Your clothing contributions must be clean and in good condition. Each contribution entitles you to choose one item of comparable value.You may depart up to half an hour after the event ends, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet, and make your trade!_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _CANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) are available up to 7 days before the event. If you cancel within 7 days of the event, we are unable to provide refunds unless we can fill your space from the waitlist. If someone who is waitlisted purchases your space, we will refund your ticket, minus the Eventbrite fees. Otherwise, there will be no refunds.
