The Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and ArtBegan in 2012 (unofficially) with the release of the fully translated—Spanish/English—MAKEMagazineissue 13, "Intercambio/Exchange." In 2014 the Lit & Luz Festival was launched from those pages and ever since has produced yearly events in Mexico City and Chicago, with writers and artists from Chicago, Mexico, and beyond.MAKE Literary Production’s sixth annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art, themed "Movement" is an ambitious exchange between Mexico City and Chicago. The week-long festival takes place at over a dozen arts venues and universities throughout Chicago, October 12th-19th. It concludes at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago with our signature event, the “Live Magazine Show." The following February, a similar series of events are held in Mexico City.We are honored to welcome inspiring authors, artists, and arts professionals from Mexico to Chicago. Art and language are key to understanding culture and community, and the cultural exchange between the United States and Mexico. With events such as Lit & Luz, we hope to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, and in particular, to increase the distribution of literature and art from Mexico for Chicago audiences and beyond.

<h2>Essays of the Self: Memory and Artifice: A Creative Workshop</h2>by Isabel ZapataDescription: Based on the work of writers such as Sei Shonagon, Natalia Ginzburg, Margarita García Robayo and Annie Ernaux, among others, we will explore the rocky territories of the “writing of the self.” We will put into tension some notions usually associated with this type of literature: memory, fiction, truth, character and subjectivity.General objective: To get know some of the influences that have marked autobiographical writing and the ways in which this tradition has advanced throughout history. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have written a short text from this point of view to exercise the tools learned during the session.Materials: For the first session, workshop participants must bring a photograph of their childhood. Additionally, reading material will be sent by email. I﻿n partnership with Instituto Cervantes Chicago<h2>The Lit &amp; Luz Festival Celebrates 10 Years of International Exchange and Collaboration!</h2>October 13-21, MAKE Literary Productions’s <a href="https://www.litluz.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Lit &amp; Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art </a>celebrates ten years of making space for essential dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States through curated artist collaborations and a week-long series of free programming in Spanish and English. The 2023-24 festival is themed “TEN”—a celebration of the festival’s tenth anniversary and all things commemorative. The theme also alludes to the Spanish meaning of the “ten,” and considers what it is to have—and have not. This one-of-a-kind cultural festival runs October 13-October 21 with over a dozen bilingual events taking place at venues throughout Chicago, as well as online. In partnership with Chicago Art Department, the festival kicks off October 13th with REENCOUNTERS/REECUENTROS, an exhibition featuring new work from past and present Collaboration Cohort participants curated by Esteban King (Mexico City) and Nicky Ni (Chicago). October 14th, the legendary author Ana Castillo delivers our keynote address in partnership with UIC’s Center for Latinx Literature of the Americas. On Saturday, October 21st, the Live Magazine Show, returns to the Museum of Contemporary Art theater. <a href="https://visit.mcachicago.org/events/lit-and-luz-festival-2023/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">At this ticketed program</a>, six pairs of Mexico- and Chicago-based participants—the Collaboration Cohort—debut multimedia collaborative pieces they have been working on in the prior months.
