Institute of Black Intellectual Innovation at Cal State University Fullerton is working to facilitate more conversations around expressions of Afrolatinidad and support for Black and Latinx solidarity in Orange County, California. Join us on October 14th centered on adornment, identity, and performance centering on Black, Latinx, and AfroLatinx culture. We will have music, food, performances from Michelle Morales and panel from our CSUF students and author of Aesthetics of Excess: The Art and Politics of Black and Latina Embodiment Jillian Hernandez.Learn more about our author and performer: Dr. Jillian Hernandez is a scholar, community arts educator, curator, and creative. Her work is inspired by Black and Latinx life and imagination, and is invested in challenging how working-class bodies, sexualities, and cultural practices are policed through gendered tropes of deviancy and respectability. She studies Blackness and Latinidad as relational formations and attends to the political, cultural, and communal dynamics of aesthetic production. Dr. Hernandez received her Ph.D. in Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University and is an Assistant Professor in the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women's Studies Research at the University of Florida. Her book, Aesthetics of Excess: The Art and Politics of Black and Latina Embodiment was published in 2020 by Duke University Press.Michelle Morales is a Queer, Afro-Latine Creative Healing Artist, Performer, and School Psychologist. She is known for her love to dance and utilizing movement as a tool for healing and self-empowerment. She creates programs that support the social-emotional functioning skills of Black and Brown youth and offers salsa classes, dance empowerment workshops, and professional development seminars for educators and organizations. You can find her sharing her life journey online for inspiration and community. I create products that will gently cleanse, moisturize, grow, and strengthen hair made with earth-based ph-balanced formulas. My products are made carefully in small batches to give each product the love and care it deserves.



As I connect to my indigenous roots, I use ingredients that I have used growing up. Knowing that these amazing plantitas (plants), hierbas (herbs), frutas (fruits), and vegetales (vegetables) have major medicinal and beneficial properties. Our source is Pachamama, Mother earth, which provides us with it all. It is incredibly important to me to know how the ingredients I use impacts the planet and how it supports the communities that plant, cultivate, and harvest them. I put a lot of love and thought making my products and I hope that whoever uses them feels it too.
