PPSC Learning Lab: Live Online via Zoom!Wednesday, November 1, 2023 6:30PM – 8:30PM (EDT)$40 Regular Admission and $25 Student/PPSC Refugee Program Volunteers<aside>PPSC's Learning Lab offers innovative, affordable workshops focused on mental health education for counselors, teachers, parents, mental health and health professionals as well as the community at large.</aside><h1></h1><h1>“Get Them to Play: Creative Methods for Increasing Therapeutic Engagement with Anxious Adolescents and Their Families”*</h1><h3>Ben Bernstein, Ph.D.</h3>Adolescents and their families can be difficult to engage in therapy. By engaging both teens and their caretakers in a play-like process – and by expanding the boundaries of what constitutes ‘play’ – therapists can increase engagement and improve outcomes for the entire family.<aside>*This talk is open to all teachers, counselors, nurses, parents, health practitioners and community members. It provides 2 hours of continuing education credits for LCSWs, LMSWs, LPs, LMHCs, LCATs, and licensed psychologists.</aside>Ben Bernstein, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist at Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut, where he also maintains a private practice. Additionally, he serves as a supervisor for the City College of New York doctoral psychology program. His academic work has been published by the American Psychological Association and his creative writing has appeared in The New Yorker and The New York Times. He is currently writing a book about "feeling real.". Learning Objectives: After attending this presentation, participants will:<ul><li>Describe the developmental and therapeutic processes connected to playing, broadly defined. </li></ul><ul><li>Appreciate the developmental tasks of adolescence, specifically describing the features of each subphase. </li></ul><ul><li>Identify two or more ways to bring play into their treatment of adolescents and families.</li></ul><ul></ul>Agenda:6:30-7:00: Review the developmental tasks of adolescence, specifically describing the features of each subphase and review select psychoanalytic concepts that can be used to describe psychological functioning: object relations, defense mechanisms, attachment.7:00-7:30: How to think about “play” as both a developmental and therapeutic process.7:30 – 8:00: Case study of an adolescent and his family and how these methods were applied.8:00 – 8:30: Discussion and working with participants to begin imagining interventions they can make with their patients.<aside> </aside><aside>**For a refund to a PPSC Learning Lab event, we must receive a cancellation notice 24 hours prior to the event.
