Robot cities and smog thick skies. Eroded shorelines and violent skirmishes over dwindling resources. Scarcity. Gloom. Dread. This is an easily imagined future. But we already know that story. What about the imagined futures where we adapt radically and gracefully, take care of each other, eat aplenty. Rooted in community resourcefulness and mutual aid. New systems, enlightened design, old wisdom renewed. We invite you to not only imagine it, but support the people and organizations who have been working tirelessly to create it.

In this particular and crucial time – more than ten years out from Sandy– Imagined Futures looks to galvanize, high-five and resource people and projects guiding us towards the future we owe to the earth... and each other. Beginning in Red Hook this fall and moving across the boroughs through 2024, we’re partnering with businesses, artists, teachers, activists and thinkers to actively imagine the future we want. <h2>The Program</h2>10/13 Opening Exhibition &amp; Launch PartyFriday we kick off the weekend at <a href="https://www.strongropebrewery.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Strong Rope Brewery </a>on the waterfront in celebration of Karen Blondel and the many community stakeholders who are actively creating Red Hook’s future. While there are a lot of challenges ahead, there is also lot to celebrate and honor.On view will be the opening of the group show and exhibit Imagined Futures with food, a live DJ from <a href="https://www.bierwaxnyc.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bierwax</a>, and Strong Rope's official launch of their Imagined Futures beer, with proceeds going to support the work of Karen Blondel and 4 other climate visionaries.There will be nonalcoholic offerings for anyone abstaining from alcohol.10/14 Red Hook WideSaturday participants will be invited to travel all over Red Hook, learning and engaging in an interactive walking scavenger hunt in collaboration with youth from <a href="https://www.redhookartproject.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Red Hook Arts Project</a>. We’ll be highlighting the work that is already happening all over the community.Join Karen Blondel for a walking tour for the in-depth digs on the issues at hand in Red Hook, from housing to heat shields. Head over to Pioneer Works to check out the exhibit <a href="https://www.headlands.org/event/climate-futurism/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Climate Futurism</a> in partnership with Headlands Center for the Arts, curated by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. Learn about <a href="https://rhicenter.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Red Hook Initiative's</a> community organizing and climate justice work, creating change from within for over 6,500 residents of the Red Hook public housing community. Get your hands dirty at youth-led <a href="https://rhicenter.org/red-hook-farms/the-farms/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Red Hook Farms</a>. Step onto living history on the floating <a href="https://waterfrontmuseum.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Waterfront Museum</a>, built atop a 100 yr old + barge. Come volunteer at the <a href="https://www.reticenter.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RETI Center</a>, an educational floating barge at GBX terminal where you’ll learn about models for a viable 2100. There we’ll welcome the docking of the <a href="http://www.schoonerapollonia.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Schooner Apollonia</a> in their fall voyage of fossil-free goods down the Hudson. Join a bicycle parade to bring the unloaded malt and grain to Strong Rope Brewery, where we’ll celebrate the delivery in style.Participants will be encouraged to learn more along the way with the interactive map app <a href="https://www.finalnoticebk.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Final Notice</a> started in 2018 by the artists and technologists of Danielle Russo Performance Project and the Youth Leaders at Red Hook Initiative and El Puente in collaboration with over 50 local activists, conservationists, environmentalists, historians, non-profit organizations, and grassroot initiatives across coastal Brooklyn. Final Notice exposes the ongoing effects of climate change, environmental racism, and historical erasure on the Brooklyn Waterfront.Anyone who collects all the clues of the scavenger hunt can come Strong Rope Brewery for a free pour or nonalcoholic treat for those underage or abstaining from alcohol.At Strong Rope there will be a climate catastrophe vs adaptogen giant Jenga tournament, epic raffle and group art show, including an interactive <a href="https://nextepochseedlibrary.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Next Epoch Seed Library</a> from artists Anne Percoco and Ellie Irons. Settle into a Sail Freight Saturday extravaganza where we’ll keep the party going into the evening, where you can pick up your pumpkins sailed in from upstate or Hudson goods while local bluegrass Barge Rat Band keeps it loose, brought to you by Shipwrecked.Sunday 10/15 Community Workshop: being with the many changesAn opportunity to explore the emotional stress of climate change--particularly how watching places we care about change--through traumatic events like floods or slow creeping forces like climate gentrification. How can we then build community, connections to nature and to each other, and have the will and the self-care to manage these changes?Join Thaddeus Pawlowski of <a href="https://crcl.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Columbia Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes</a> and Community facilitator &amp; therapist Jennie Kogan. Community warmup and centering from somatic teacher Natasha Corbie.Held at the beautiful <a href="https://waterfrontmuseum.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Waterfront Museum</a>, housed aboard the 1914 Lehigh Valley Barge #79, the museum provides an unparalleled place for educational and cultural programs aboard an historic vessel while advocating for and expanding public waterfront access in the NY metropolitan area.
