Create Smokey Bear Posters for the NGC Poster contest and munch on popcorn as we celebrate Smokey's 80th Birthday!

Join us for this fun-filled creative evening. We will celebrate conservation icon, Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday by preparing posters for the<a href="https://gardenclub.org/smokey-bear-woodsy-owl-youth-poster-contest" title="https://gardenclub.org/smokey-bear-woodsy-owl-youth-poster-contest" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> National Garden Clubs Inc. youth poster contest</a>.This year’s contest is dedicated to Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday! Children from first through fifth grade are invited to participate in this annual drawing contest featuring Smokey Bear.We will spend time talking about the important messages that Smokey Bear relates in his motto: "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires"!The older kids will spend some time creating as well. They will have the option to create promotional posters for DGC Sprouts while the younger kids work on the Smokey Bear posters.T here are also a few other youth contests if the kids are so inclined, they are encouraged to create and present their works to the crowd at the Sprouts meeting that evening. See links for more details and start creating.The <a href="https://gardenclub.org/poetry-contest" title="https://gardenclub.org/poetry-contest" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">poetry contest</a> has separate categories from grade K through 9th grade. 2023-2024 Theme:"I Spy With My Little Eye, Something Green Outside - Celebrating Our Green World".The <a href="https://www.gardenclub.org/youth-sculpture-contest" title="https://www.gardenclub.org/youth-sculpture-contest" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">sculpture contest </a>is for grades 4th -8th and encourages reuse, repurposing and recycling.The theme: Encouraging Youth to Keep Our Planet GreenThis contest encourages students to keep our planet green and to get involved with saving the environment. Students in grades 4 through 8 are eligible to create a sculpture of recyclable, reused, and reduced materials. The sculpture is limited in width to 81/2 inches by 11 inches. Height should be proportional to width.Entries for all of these contests need to be submitted to Garden Clubs of IL by mid-January. There will be time to create and finish up at home too. Smokey Bear is recognized nationally and internationally as the symbol for wildfire prevention. The original Smokey Bear appeared in 1944. Smokey’s message, “Only you can prevent wildfires!” encourages personal responsibility for wildfire prevention. Smokey Bear teaches children and adults to be careful with campfires, barbecues, burning yard waste, and matches.
