The project continues to follow this model, songwriting and friendship at the core, studying the distance between “you” and “me” with each new release. Early recordings, mostly lost, include works such as ‘Late Dawn Inheritance’ and ‘Heavy Shadows’ as well as a wealth of pinhole microphone productions about family, religion, colors, dying, fantasy and finitude. Lomelda’s first proper LP ‘Forever’ was released in 2015. Hannah collaborated with Zach Daniel (drums), Andrew Hulett (guitar) and Tommy Read (producer/engineer) to make this album. It is a highly dynamic and emotional rock band record that explores the endings of things—a friendship, a day, life. After that release, out of a feeling of dissatisfaction, Hannah re- recorded the songs as a live performance on classical guitar. She, along with two close friends, commandeered a concert hall in Waco, TX, for the occasion. It was an effort for intimacy in a big empty space. That recording became ‘4E’ and was released in 2016. The following year, Lomelda found new friends in record label Double Double Whammy. The project’s first release on the label came in September 2017—‘Thx’. This album features the introspective mood and dynamic range the band is known for with a new gentleness and balance; also featuring the drumming of Zach Daniel, production work of Tommy Read, and Hannah covering the rest. ‘Thx’ reached new audiences as Lomelda spent the next year and a half playing live across the US and Europe with acts such as Frankie Cosmos, Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief and Florist. Lomelda lead off 2019 with a new album called ‘M for Empathy’. With this taut song collection, Hannah reflects on communication and confusion—and attempts to come closer than ever. Hannah recorded the album with Tommy Read at Lazybones Studio in her hometown of Silsbee, TX, after a year of making a new home in Los Angeles.LONG BEARDNew Brunswick, NJhttps://long-beard.bandcamp.com/Means To Me is the second full-length under Leslie Bear’s moniker, Long Beard, and her first since 2015’s Sleepwalker. Throughout the record, Leslie explores what constitutes a home—how it extends beyond the physicality of a roof over your head to the comfort of another person. A sense of self, stability or security. The last four years between records mark a particularly significant and transitional time for Bear. A career move led her back to her hometown in New Jersey long after her friends and peers moved away, resulting in feelings of stasis and nostalgia that shape the album. Reflections on the past are evident in tracks like album single “Sweetheart”, in which Bear considers a past love, where they are now, and her life in relation to theirs. Bear’s sophomore album shows a growth and maturation in sound from her debut. Co-produced with Craig Hendrix (Japanese Breakfast), the record occupies a dreamlike space that weaves between shoegaze-tinged guitars and upbeat, jangly pop. While still loyal to Leslie’s signature ethereal, melodic guitars and haunting whispered vocal delivery, the fully realized arrangements demonstrate a stunning clarity throughout the album. The perfect amalgamation between Bear’s ambient-textured loops met with the pristine production and pop stylings of Hendrix’s playing can be heard in album standout “Snow Globe.” The combined reversal effects, seamless transitions, and heartbeat percussion are the language of Means To Me. What Bear has created with Means To Me is not only a mirror for herself, but also a means for the listener to reflect on what home means to them. Whether Bear has defined a home for herself is left to wonder, as she leaves us with these final lines before the album crescendos into an explosive distorted instrumental and slowly fades: “driving down through our state lines while you dream, I’m thinking of a name to go by.”THE GOODBYE PARTYPhiladelphia, PAhttps://thegoodbyeparty.bandcamp.com/After spending five years leading DC/Philly-based power-pop band The Ambulars, Michael Cantor needed an outlet for his other songs: the bedroom recordings - noisy lo-fi experiments, meandering somber songs with auxiliary instrumentation (bowed guitar, lap steel guitar, tape collages) all recorded by Cantor in isolation. He relocated to Philadelphia and started releasing home-recordings as The Goodbye Party. This solo project he would later fully flesh out to create his first full length album under that project, Silver Blues. A true labor of love, Cantor recorded most of the album himself, aided by drummer Joey Doubek (Pinkwash, Downtown Boys). Learning about recording and production as he went, he spent the better part of a year closed up in a makeshift studio, augmenting his album with cassette and analog 4-track recordings. The result is an album that exists within its own universe, one that weaves in and out of itself, floats and sinks, held together by its own internal logic. Silver Blues is full of lush orchestral strings, built on top of degrading cassettes and feedback and ecstatic power-pop anthems that bleed out into vocal dirges.
