The action of the drama is set in St. Louis and directly refers to the youth and familyhome of Williams himself. Tom Wingfield tries to fight for himself and his dreams. He wantsto become a poet. However, the path to fulfilling this dream is difficult and involves thenecessity of leaving the family home. On the other hand, he tries to help his mother who israising him and his sister alone. The prototype of Laura Wingfield is Williams's sister - Rose.It is to her that the author dedicates the play. By reaching for this drama, we wanted to lookat various family situations. Reflect on the daily struggles of young people with extraordinarysensitivity. Their fight against lack of acceptance and misunderstanding from parents,material limitations, difficulties in peer relationships. We consider how they can find theirplace. Can they at all? The Glass Menagerie is part of Williams's triptych at the BazaTheatre (The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof).OUR TEAMTomasz ZadróżnyTheatre director, pedagogue, culture animator, founder of Baza Theatre. He graduated fromthe Theatre Academy in Warsaw in 2001 at the Department of Theatre Studies. There hedirected his first play in the scientific club A dream play based on Strindberg's drama.Assistant director to Piotr Cieplak for Two Gentlemen of Verona, Krystian Lupa's Return ofOdys. He then went to study at the Petersburg Theatre Academy. There he studied actingand directing. He ran the 108 Theatre, where he acted and directed, created projects ofmeetings with artists, artistic expeditions. With Theatre 108 he visited Germany, Ukraine,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan. He completed an acting internship at Odin Teatret (Denmark), anacting-directing internship with the Jerzy Grotowski Center and Thomas Richards fromPontedera (Moscow). He draws experience from direct work with Katathali Theatre, DerevoTheatre, Eighth Day Theatre, Leszek Bzdyl, Yoshi Oida, Andrey Droznin, Rimas Tuminas,Lev Dodin. He participated in an international seminar dedicated to the acting method of M.Chekhov. After returning to the country, in 2006 he founded the Theatre Studio at DKDorożkarnia (an original program based on the Stanislavsky system). After five years ofactivity, appreciated by the city authorities, he received premises for his own theatre andartistic-educational center. For nearly twenty years he has been training young actors anddirectors. In 2022 he was honored with the Award of the City of Warsaw.Piotr Dyczewskiborn 1989 | Actor, pianist, set designer. I will limit myself to a fewsentences, because it's not about the review itself. Scenography, costumes, music, light andeverything that makes up a decent play, is there. It's a great pleasure when on stage thegestures towards objects make sense, when the movement is free but not random and youcan feel the sensitive hand of the director (Tomasz Zadróżny – hats off!) under the surface ofthese actions. Every word that fell on stage and off it (because the actors also play from theoff, from the backstage), not only sounded, but kept in bond with the viewer. Do youremember what it's like when you can HEAR EVERYTHING? When for two hours it doesn'teven cross your mind to look at the watch? And it's true, they really understand what they'retalking about. These young people are wonderful, they were lucky to meet wise andsensitive adults. Despite the entrenched myth of a lost, entitled and stupid generation, theygo their own way, read this world in their own way and bring their extraordinary sensitivity toit. Let's make room for them. The power of youth is the common wealth of the whole world.The faces of young people are the faces of our past, our present and our future. No segmentin society can match the strength, idealism, enthusiasm and courage of young people.Agnieszka WieleckaAgain I saw a good performance in Baza. This time the actors took on the American classic,Williams's intimate play is also perfectly suited to the tiny stage of Baza, we have Amanda'sapartment, where she lives with two grown-up children, to our trio of heroes joins Tom'sfriend - Jim. Maybe I won't summarize the text of the drama, I'll just note that althoughWilliams's dramas are masterpieces, they are somehow missing from the posters of Polishtheatres, in Warsaw we recently watched Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in the National Theatre,Menagerie appeared a few years ago in the Bagatela Theatre, besides that, nothing. Is itbecause the fashion is now for Chekhov? The performance was really enjoyable to watch,Laura with her fragility was really pitiful, and the heroic efforts of Amanda - to marry off herdaughter, to - change the lives of her children were at times wonderfully funny - (great in thisrole, sometimes approaching the border of overdrawn mother character, but... not crossing itMagdalena Dudek) - and at times moving. Nice idea to stage TW's triptych, intrigued I'mwaiting for the remaining titles!Rafał TurowskiTwo Poor Polish-Speaking RomaniansI confirmed this evening in my suspicions that this play is one of the most important texts ofPolish contemporary drama, certainly - the top five. But - as with a masterpiece - one musthandle it carefully, with respect, otherwise it will indeed come out as a joke about cluelessPolish-speaking hitchhikers from Romania. Difficult matter, because Masłowska wrote thetext deliberately showy, and you can't show it showily, because it will come out showy, andtherefore bad, because it will be overdrawn, and it is already overdrawn. However, the actorsof Baza know perfectly well where this border lies, indeed, they approached it, as if sniffingit, but they did not cross it. They charged - where there was a place for a charge, and theywere poetically lyrical, where Masłowska demands lyricism.
