Thursday, January 9thModern Nature + Olden Yolk + Near Northeast9pm - $12 - All AgesMODERN NATURELondon, UKhttps://modernnature.bandcamp.com/Modern Nature - the name taken from the title of Derek Jarman’s garden diaries - is the new project of Jack Cooper, ex of Ultimate Painting / Mazes and Will Young of Beak featuring Aaron Neveu of Woods and Sunwatchers’ Jeff Tobias on saxophone.Their debut Nature EP will be released 22nd March via Bella Union. ‘Supernature’ is an intimately atmospheric, wildly expansive 12-minute statement of intent a world away from anything any of the members have made before. It melds the relentless rhythms of Alice Coltrane’s devotional music with the pastoral haze of Fairport Convention.As Jack Cooper explains: “The EP is based around a song called ‘Nature’ so ‘Supernature’ is a different perspective on the EP’s title track, but taken to another conclusion. It’s our most recent recording and there seems to be some sense in people hearing that first. ‘Nature’ is our take on that propulsive rhythm of A Sailor’s Life-era Fairport Convention but ‘Supernature’ is something else entirely. The band is so new, it’s hard to say who’s in and who isn’t. At the moment it’s myself and Will Young (Beak) with Aaron Neveu on drums (Woods/Herbcraft) Rupert Gillett on cello and then Jeff Tobias on saxophone (Sunwatchers). The band started as a vehicle for a wider project that Will and I spent the year putting together so it feels very exciting to be an actual band now. Every song we record or musician we gain, another door seems to open on a route that’s worth pursuing.”OLDEN YOLKNew York, NYhttps://oldenyolk.bandcamp.com/album/olden-yolkOlden Yolk is the project led by songwriters Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer. Their 2018 self-titled LP enveloped listeners in a sound uniquely of-the-moment yet simultaneously time-tested, oscillating between art rock tendencies and delicate, yet angular ballads. The project was initially conceived in 2012 by Butler as an outlet for one-off songs and visual art while touring and releasing albums with the band Quilt (Mexican Summer). Following the release of a split-record with Weyes Blood in 2014, the duo released their first full-length LP on Trouble in Mind in 2018. The record grew from a poetry collaboration Shaffer and Butler started in 2016, in which they would write a poem to each other each day. On their second studio album, Living Theatre, these lines jump from the page into an animated, breathing organism. Living Theatre conjures moments of stark minimalism and cinematic maximalism, most potent for Shaffer and Butler’s lyrical intimacy and vivid arrangements. The title was inspired by the experimental thespian movement in New York of the same name, in which actors broke from tradition by creating an experience of communal expression. Their songwriting palette takes cues from influences as disparate as avant garde punk, psychedelic folk, and experimental electronic music. Inspired by both freedom and restriction in their creative practice, the pair set to record the album in a constrained period of 3 months after spending a year on the road touring without a home base. They wrote all summer, in a space with no windows, molding private conversations into more expansive works that address concepts of home, spirituality, and ancestry in a contemporary landscape. “Grand Palais” is a celebratory inquiry into the practice of self-compassion, while the more ominous “Distant Episode” (named after the Paul Bowles story about a linguist whose tongue is cut off) paints a picture of a woman trapped inside a room with a television.NEAR NORTHEASTWashington, DChttps://nearnortheast.bandcamp.com/Near Northeast formed in Washington, DC shortly after meeting while playing a South Asian music festival at the Kennedy Center. Guitarist Avy has made music in San Francisco, Portland, Europe, and India. Antonio developed his approach to percussion in Bosnia and New Mexico. Violinist and vocalist Kelly grew up singing and playing in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia. Austin took up the bass during his childhood in Virginia. While their aesthetics reflect the music on which they each cut their teeth --- Latin American, Indian, Balkan, and Appalachian --- their songwriting chemistry and musically adventurous spirit reach past these reference points.Near Northeast released their debut full-length Curios in 2015. In 2017, the band followed up with True Mirror, their full-length second album, and with Indali Variations 1-8, a cassette single featuring meditative ambient music. While True Mirror shares aesthetics and instrumentation with its predecessor, it forges forward into new ground as a band building both craft and confidence atop a strong foundation built of diverse musical backgrounds. The songs, at-times darker in tone but also more varied in their musical exploration, take Near Northeast&#x27;s finely executed indie-folk sound to new heights, with acoustic ballads, electronica-inspired elegies, roof raisers and barn stompers.
