Wake Up and Rest: Jane Addams Bedroom Project Launch with Tricia Hersey

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum(JAHHM)draws upon the legacy of international peace activist and feminist, Jane Addams, and other social reformers who worked, alongside their immigrant neighbors, to create social change on the Near West Side of Chicago during the Progressive Era. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision. Exhibitions and public programs elevate histories of activism, progressive education and democratic principles of participation and exchange, and connect them to present-day social justice issues.

Wake up and rest with <a href="http://www.triciahersey.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tricia Hersey</a>, founder of <a href="https://thenapministry.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Nap Ministry</a>, an organization that examines rest as a form of resistance. Hersey will be launching a project at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum aiming to make rest more attainable with a collective napping experience on Sunday, September 17th. Hersey will also be reading from her New York Times bestselling book, Rest is Resistance. This event is open to the public!Social reformer Jane Addams believed strongly in play and rest. Addams advocated for less work and more leisure as she fought to legislate the 8-hour workday when people often worked 14-hour days in terrible conditions. During the turn of the century, you could find the city’s very first public playground and also its first public art gallery at Hull-House. Addams believed that art and creativity are central to what it means to be human and that rest was a human right. Following the event, UIC community members can sign up to nap in Jane Addams’s bedroom through the fall. Take in history, and then take a nap. Itinerary12:00pm - 12:30pm: Doors open. Witness Tricia Hersey’s radical rest in Jane Addams’ bedroom (2nd floor) &amp; circulate throughout the museum.12:30pm - 1:00pm: Walk next door to the Resident’s Dining Hall for a reading of Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto.
