Can children participate?

Yes, this is an all-ages program and children accommodated by an adult can participate in activities. For kayaking, participants must be 5 years of age or older. For dragon boats, participants should be 6 years of age or older.

How do I get to The Joy of Kayaking?

We strongly encourage taking public transportation or riding our free shuttle from the Roxbury Branch or Grove Hall Branch Boston Public Libraries. The program is also easily accessible from the Silver Line and South Station. (If you take the MBTA, we'll have two-trip MBTA passes available.)

How do I catch the free shuttle?

Shuttles depart from Roxbury Branch Library and Grove Hall Branch Library to the Boston Children's Museum at 10AM, 11AM, 12PM, 1PM, 2PM. Shuttles leave the Museum for Roxbury and Grove Hall at 10:30AM, 11:30AM, 12:30PM, 1:30PM, 2:30PM.

Where do I park?

There is limited metered street parking in the area. We suggest these lower-cost parking options: 1) Channelside Parking located, 45 Binford Street, charges a flat rate of $5. 2) Atlantic Wharf Garage, 280 Congress, charges $12.

Question 6

Will food or drink be provided?

Accepted Answer

Yes, food will be provided. When you arrive at the Welcome Tent, you will receive a ticket for lunch from Fresh Food Generation (served from 11am-1pm) and a ticket for ice cream from the Hood Milk Bottle (open 11am-5pm). Please bring a full water bottle.

What should I wear and bring?

There is no required attire. However, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a bit wet. It is a bit cooler and sunnier on the water, so consider bringing a sweater, hat/sunglasses, sunscreen, and a full water bottle.

How many people will be attending?

We anticipate approximately 400 people will attend The Joy of Kayaking.

Do I need to bring my ticket?

Accepted Answer

This year, we hope to scan tickets. So, if you can bring your ticket (digitally on your phone works well) that would be greatly appreciated.

Where do I go first?

Accepted Answer

Please arrive to one of our Welcome Tents. If this is your first time attending, we recommend coming to The Joy of Kayaking Welcome Tent at Boston Children's Museum (308 Congress Street).

Question 11

What happens if it rains?

Accepted Answer

The event will take place rain or shine. However, on-the-water activities may need to be adjusted in response to weather conditions.
