Join The Nicholson Project for The Great Persons Series: Inspiring Children Through History and Social Justice led by Chitra Subramanian

The Nicholson Project presents The Great Persons Series: Community Experience Days for Kids and Families. Presented in collaboration with DC-based educator and dance artist, Chitra Subramanian, this series is designed for children ages 3- 12 years old and will take place Saturdays in October from 12pm to 4pm. Community Experience Days are intended for children and their families to drop in anytime during these hours. Special programming will be implemented throughout the four Saturdays, including community workshops in dance, gardening, and storytelling. The Great Persons Series fosters transformation, inspiration, and self-awareness through interactive exhibits and programs that bring history and social justice to life. Focusing on the life stories of Great People from our past and present, children learn about the important issues of our world and communities through powerful hands-on experiences. Participants will explore the life story of a Great Person through hands-on experiential activities, ranging from the visual arts/crafts, writing, movement/performance, music, multimedia, and more. These hands-on experiences encourage children to process the content and immerse themselves into the Great Person’s life story. Each week will be featuring the following trailblazers: October 7: Zitkala-SaDakota Yankton Writer and Musician, Cultural Preserver, and Political Activist for her Native American PeopleOctober 14: Harry BelafonteCivil Rights Icon and Legendary Singer and Actor from JamaicaOctober 21: Mary McLeod BethunePowerful Educator, Activist for Racial Justice, and Champion for Women and GirlsOctober 28: George Washington CarverAgronomist, Scientist, and Pioneer in Sustainable FarmingThe program will take place at The Nicholson Project’s new workshop/art-making space situated adjacent to our garden. The art-making space will be transformed into a hands-on history museum for children. In this format, the Great Persons Series will curate a series of exhibits that focus on “Great Persons” through multi-sensory and multi-dimensional hands-on modules. As a curated and self-guided experience, children and families explore each exhibit and learn about the extraordinary lives of each Great Person. She is a Pittsburgh native, originally from South India. Chitra has cultivated over 12 years of nonprofit youth education experience, working with young people and their families in various neighborhoods in DC and Prince George’s County. She also currently teaches, choreographs, and performs with an emerging collective of artists called chitra.MOVES. Her aesthetic draws from Hip Hop and Indian Classical foundations to tell stories, elevate artists, and meaningfully engage unseen and new audiences. Chitra has presented work and choreography at DanceUSADance (India’s ZEETV Network), the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, Joe’s Movement Emporium, Dance Place, and PearlPRESENTS Festival. She has taught at various community-based and university settings including, M.O.M.I.E’s.The Nicholson Project is a paid artist residency program and neighborhood garden in Ward 7’s Fairlawn neighborhood. Our mission is to support, provide opportunities, engage, and amplify artists and creatives from our community and the local artist community—particularly artists of color and those from Ward 7 and 8—while engaging our neighbors through community-based programming. Our vision is to serve as a cultural hub and community anchor celebrating Ward 7’s authentic identity, while infusing new vibrancy into Southeast DC. We hope to inspire others to use similar non-traditional arts and community-centered projects as a pathway toward stronger, more vibrant communities.
