Are you having difficulty keeping track of different versions of your code?

Are you afraid to implement changes to a stable version of your code, nervous in case it breaks everything?

Do you have lots of collaborators who use/develop the same code?

Do you want to showcase your code development skills to the world?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” – this workshop is for you.

We will cover the importance of version control in code development and explore options such as git and svn repositories. We will learn how to maintain different versions of code and branching. Methods to track changes in a coding project, creating and maintaining remote repositories (that is, part of a project residing on a server or on the internet, away from your laptop) will be demonstrated. The important tool of staging changes - that is, working on a project before committing to version control will be demonstrated. We will focus on both svn and git to explore the above tools. 

The workshop will be a hands-on session to test our knowledge as we go.



Objectives: 

Have an understanding of local and web based software repositories and their differences.
Have hands-on experience with git and svn
Learn how to share code with collaborators/users
Learn about branching and version control


Level: Introductory

Duration: 2 hours

Prerequisites: All participants are encouraged to bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system on which they have administrative privileges. Having a gitlab/github/svn account is helpful – but not necessary as we can create one at the workshop.
