NORWAY HOUSE CONNECTS THE UNITED STATES WITH CONTEMPORARY NORWAY THROUGH ARTS | BUSINESS | CULTUREAs the window to contemporary Norway, Norway House is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that partners with businesses, organizations, and the community to celebrate a shared heritage. Norway House is a destination for the community with over 40,000 visitors annually. The big, blue Albert Quie Education Center opened its doors at 913 Franklin Ave, Minneapolis in May of 2015, strategically adjacent to Mindekirken, the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in the Ventura Village neighborhood. The location boasts a rich and diverse residential history.Through our programs—which include the Galleri at Norway House, Minnesota Peace Initiative, and the Edvard Grieg Society of Minnesota—you can experience contemporary art, design, and music. Visitors can engage in discussion about important topics that share links to Norway and the global community.We serve not only as a center for our programming, but also as a convening space and resource for our business and non-profit partners, locally and globally.

We will explore the traditional techniques of triple braiding coiled
pewter wire and sewing the finished braid to softened reindeer hide.

Northern Scandinavia is the land of the midnight sun, the northern lightsand the Saami, a nomadic tribal group that follows the migration of thereindeer. Traditional Saami adornment incorporated elements of theirnorthern landscape- softened reindeer leather and sculpted antler. In thiscourse we will explore the traditional techniques of triple braiding coiledpewter wire and sewing the finished braid to a softened reindeer hidestrip. A reindeer antler button finishes off the bracelet. With a 30 yearbackground in Scandinavian jewelry arts, Liz uses the finest qualityreindeer hide and pewter wire comprised of 96% tin and 4% silverimported directly from Sweden. NOTE: There is an additional $95 fee to cover the cost of supplies that Liz will collect at the beginning of class.A﻿bout the Instructor: Liz Bucheit creates jewelry and body adornment inspired by herScandinavian ancestry and keeps close ties to her heritage by drawinginspiration from Nordic folklore and myth. A goldsmith for over 30years, she holds a Master’s degree in metalworking and jewelry fromthe University of Iowa, Iowa City and has trained in traditional jewelryand metalworking techniques in Ireland and Norway. Liz has wonnumerous competitions and been awarded grants from theMinnesota State Arts Board, McKnight Foundation, Sons of Norwayand the SE Minnesota Arts Council. Most recently, she was therecipient of a American Scandinavian grant, which allowed Liz totravel to Norway to research, study, and document Sami silverworktraditions.She has exhibited in museums and cultural centers and her bridaltiaras and wedding jewelry are in many collections. Liz is an activespeaker on the topic of Norwegian filigree work and conducts workshops and classes in jewelry designand fabrication.
