Two Kinds Trio

The Sound Room is aptly named. The focus is on the sound or the music. Unlike clubs where the performance may be peripheral to the experience, at the Sound Room the performance is the experience.  We are an all-ages listening room. We exist to present great music and promote jazz as an art form.The Sound Room is the home of Bay Area Jazz & Arts, a  501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on promoting the Arts.

The collective Two Kinds Trio brings original compositions, cyclical musical mantras, and arrangements of standards to life with the spirit of the moment. Drawing on inspirations from Chopin to D&#x27;Angelo and experience working with artists from Dayna Stephens to Anderson .Paak, their performance at the Sound Room should be an exciting, swinging, uplifting experience.Known for his “high skill and sensitivity,” (NYTimes) Chris McCarthy is one of the most in demand pianists in New York City. McCarthy has developed a reputation as “one of the most imaginative and impressive voices on the New York jazz scene” (Hot House Jazz Magazine). McCarthy grew up in Seattle’s thriving local music scene. Early accolades included winning the 2012 Gerald Wilson Award for big band composition at the Monterey Jazz Festival. McCarthy is known for his sensitive accompanying of vocalists, working with many of New York’s finest: Vanisha Gould, Lucy Yeghizarian, Aubrey Johnson and Sami Stevens to name a few. McCarthy is also active in the world music scene, touring with Carnatic vocalist Roopa Mahadevan and Gnawa musician Samir Langus. His playing is featured on albums by rising stars such as vibraphonist Sasha Berliner (Azalea, 2019) and saxophonist Eden Bareket (Day Dream, 2021). In January 2023, he was a featured artist in legendary pianist Johnny O’Neal’s show “Tribute to the Crooners” at Jazz at Lincoln Center. He currently plays in legendary tap dancer Dormeshia’s new show “Rhythm is Life,” a New York Times Critic’s pick.Owen Clapp is a bassist and writer living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has had the opportunity to play upright and electric bass for a diverse range of artists, including Anderson .Paak, Dumbfoundead, George Watsky, India Carney, Ari Afsar, and Grammy award-winning Jazz musicians Jonah Levine, Ruslan Sirota, Mads Tolling, Evan Price, and Bill Cunliffe, among others. His recording credits include work with Grammy-nominated producers Julian-Quán Việt Lê and Jeff Kolhede. Owen’s writing focuses on the people and history of rural West Marin, California, and appears in publications like the Pulitzer Prize-winning Point Reyes Light newspaper - as well as in a book in the nationwide Images of America series. He is the founder of a small archive in San Geronimo, CA.Drummer Jake Shandling strives to make rhythmically compelling, texturally rich music that tells an honest story reflecting the people, places, and experiences that have molded him. He has worked with artists including Slavic Soul Party!, Dayna Stephens, Zach Moses, Noel Jewkes, Joe Warner, and Ben Goldberg, and has performed throughout the USA and Europe at venues including The Jazz Gallery, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Bar Next Door, and National Sawdust, as well as on the musical scores of films includingOff In The Far Away Somewhere: Georgia O&#x27;Keeffe&#x27;s Hawaii (2018) and Musicians &amp; Magicians (2018).
