Join Visual Arts Alumni Resident and ceramicist Nicholas Oh in creating moon jars, historical Korean vessels named for their resemblance to the full moon. Throughout this two-day workshop, participants will learn about the history of the moon jar, basic handbuilding techniques including coil building, pinch potting, slip and scoring, and slip decoration as well as the pit fire and raku process. Ultimately, participants will apply these techniques to create their own moon jar.Date: This in-person workshop will meet twice on Sunday, October 22 and 29 from 1-5pm.Price: $200 (includes materials)Audience: Open to all.Materials: Materials will be supplied.Accessibility: Class will meet in the garden with a gravel path. For more information about Pioneer Works&#x27; accessibility, visit https://pioneerworks.org/visitNicholas Oh is a project-based artist who centers on broader questions concerning race and political issues in the U.S. His current research comprises interviews of first generation immigrants of marginalized communities, historical archives researching the colonization of Korean culture, and investigations of material language.Oh uses a variety of sculptural processes: 3D scanning/printing, LED, wood, and clay. His sculptures are also used to create installation spaces and performances. Performances range from engagements with community to reconfigured dance choreographies. His films document and translate the performances and installation spaces into a cohesive narrative.
