<h1>Welcome to the Rivanna River Basin  Commission 8th Annual Conference!</h1><h3>Learn about PFAS from local, state, and federal experts. </h3><h3>Thursday, September 28th, 9:00 am-12:30pm </h3><h3>Albemarle County Office Building, Lane Auditorium</h3><h3>401 McIntire Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22902</h3><p>The 2023 Rivanna River Basin Conference will focus on Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), also known as &quot;forever chemicals&quot;, and efforts to study and mitigate their persistence in the environment. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in a variety of products, that do not break down in the environment or our bodies, and can contaminate drinking water, harm wildlife, and present human health risks and other negative impacts.</p><p>We will we hear from experts from the Environmental Protection Agency, Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority, Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Department of Health, and Western Virginia Water Authority to learn about recent studies, regulatory updates, the risks to our community, and the solutions that are being developed to address PFAS. </p><p>The Rivanna River Basin Commission is dedicated to the health of the Rivanna basin and is excited to provide you with the free opportunity to learn more about this evolving topic. <h2>Optional Workshop: Community Science Opportunities with the Rivanna Conservation Alliance</h2><h3>Thursday, September 28th, 2023 | 5:30PM–7:00PM EDT | RCA Office, 1150 River Rd</h3><p>Interested in volunteering to monitor stream health and water quality in the Rivanna Watershed? </p><p>J﻿oin the Rivanna Conservation Alliance (RCA) in the evening for a workshop on community science programs and how to get involved locally. RCA will provide an overview of the following volunteer opportunities</p><ul><li>biological monitoring</li><li>b﻿acteria monitoring</li><li>s﻿alt monitoring</li></ul><p>and describe FrogWatch, a new program beginning in 2024. For anyone interested in becoming a SaltWatch monitor for the upcoming winter season, RCA will also offer a brief training session and distribute monitoring kits immediately after the presentation.</p><p>T﻿he workshop is free and refreshments will be provided! Register with RCA through their website linked <a href="https://evergreen.humanitru.com/web/campaigns/rivanna-conservation-alliance~volunteer-events?tab_884=id%3A10888" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</p><p>RCA is the only Virginia nonprofit to be certified by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality at the highest level of monitoring protocol for both bacteria and biological monitoring programs. This means that the water quality data collected by RCA and its volunteers is used by local, state, and even federal government agencies to make informed decisions about environmental issues. See if you live in the Rivanna Watershed pictured below. Parts of Fluvanna, Greene, Albemarle and all of Charlottesville are within the watershed. </p><p></p>
