Playground Science (TK-5 Educator Workshop)

Visitors can touch a tornado, create colored shadows, examine the vibration of guitar strings and get their hands on a variety of intriguing scientific phenomena.

<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"> Playground Science at the Fleet Science Center</H3>
This Playground Science workshop supports K-5 educators in promoting science learning through playground equipment and physical play activities. Experiments and investigations in this workshop will be based around Pause|Play, the Fleet Science Center’s newest exhibition that puts a science spin on popular playground equipment and recreation activities.

<H5 CLASS="MsoNormal">Playgrounds can be ideal places to ignite scientific curiosity and creativity in children. They serve as physical hands-on environments for experiencing and exploring complex science concepts through embodied play. Engaging in play activities, such as running, jumping, sliding and swinging, to explore scientific concepts requires children to use all their senses and cognitive abilities. – New York Hall of Science</H5>

Educators will use their experience in the exhibition space to develop their own science activities specific to the type of playground available to them at their school.
 
Two Date Options:

<LI>Saturday, October 12, 2019, 9 a.m.</LI>
<LI>Saturday, December 14, 2019, 9 a.m. </LI>
</UL>
Both workshops cover identical content. 
 
What to Expect:

<LI>Networking with area teachers.</LI>
<LI>Experiencing playground science activities as a learner.</LI>
<LI>An exhibition experience before the science center opens to the public.</LI>
<LI>Assistance developing a standards-based science activity specific to each educator’s playground or recreation space.</LI>
</UL>
 
What to Bring:
<UL>
<LI>Photographs or notes detailing the playground at your school.</LI>
<LI>A laptop or tablet for collaboration (note: a limited number of Fleet laptops are available)</LI>
</UL>
 
Entrance Location:
Enter through the Business Entrance, located on the south side of the Fleet Science Center, adjacent to the parking lot. The parking lot is accessible by following Park Blvd and turning onto Space Theater Way. The doors will open by 4:50 p.m. Late arrivals will need to ring the doorbell.
