Merit Scholarship Winners Exhibition 2023 Opening Reception

On June 2, 1875, a group of art students had the radical idea to create their own art school—one designed for and run byindependent artists.These students broke away from theNational Academy of Design and started the Art Students League of New York—an atelier-style institution whereanyone with an interest in art education can learn traditional fine art technique.Withmore than 100 classes taught in-studio and online, League students make art from day one. League artistslearn by doing, under the guidance of professional artist instructors. Free from a set curriculum and restrictive grading system, League students can focus on making art.There are no applications or prerequisites. This exhibition presents new works created by some of the thirty-nine students who were awarded League scholarships in 2022.

In August 2022, thirty-nine League students were awarded scholarships to study at the League based on the merit of their work. This exhibition presents work they created during the following year. League scholarships are awarded by a jury of professional artists, critics, and gallerists who are selected and invited to participate by the League’s curatorial staff and Artistic Director. Merit Scholarships are given in support of full-time study at the League and are made possible by the support of the Friends of the League and other generous donors. Merit scholarships are awarded in three main categories; Abstract, Realism and Semi-Abstract/Semi-Objective. More than two hundred artists competed to win the thirty-nine scholarships awarded in 2022. Their portfolios were reviewed by jurors Mitra Abbaspour, Will Cotton, Patricia Cronin, David Kassan, James Lee, Christian Viveros-Faune, Jasmine Wahi, and Shoshanna Weinberger. Artists in the exhibition: Susana Aldanondo, Victoria Carter, Aiko O.
