The concept of work-life balance has been around since the late 1800’s when manufacturing laws were passed to restrict how long women and children could work. Over the years, the laws continued to change to limit the hours employees could work during the day and week, but the number of hours a provider is expected to work hasn’t changed due to being “on call” or available after hours. Even with all the innovations in technology, the lines have become more blurred than ever trying to balance work and personal life when someone can be available 24/7 via text, phone, and email. The concept of work-life balance is even more challenging for providers due to the demands placed on them and the barriers created by organizational, social, and personal roles.
This presentation will provide the audience with current barriers preventing providers from focusing on themselves and the three pillars of how to promote provider self-care. The audience will walk away with a greater understanding and appreciation of what challenges providers are facing and practical tools that can be implemented into any organization to promote provider self-care.

Teri Chilcoat MS, PHR, SHRM-CP is the founder of Lean In Life Coaching and is a recognized expert on redefining work-life balance. Prior to starting her own coaching business, Teri spent over fifteen years in human resources with an emphasis on employee relations. Teri spent six years of her career in the health care sector providing valuable insight and coaching to managers, executives, and physician leadership.In her last role with Texas Oncology, Teri was responsible for the human resources functions for over fifteen hundred employees and four hundred providers while managing three HR Business Partners.Teri holds a Master of Science in Strategic Human Resources from the University of Denver and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of La Verne. Teri has been a member of the Dallas HR professional association since 2015 and has been certified with Human Resource Certification Institution since 2013 and a certification with Society of Human Resource Professional since 2015. Teri also volunteers her time with Dallas HR and the non-profit, Catchafire.
