Native grasslands played an important part in the human history of the Southeast, influencing the locations of towns and cities, patterns of settlement, industry, agriculture, and other land use. They are also hotspots of biodiversity, providing habitat for countless plant and animal species. Over the last 200 years grasslands, and the species that depend on them, are in rapid decline in the Southeast. As a transformative leader in grassland conservation, the Southeastern Grasslands Institute builds regional momentum to protect these significant areas.
