Join Black Reverence Chair, a ritual for Black affirmation &amp; joy by Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, as it tours across four sites around Philadelphia!

Black Reverence Chair will be holding its first citywide tour of Philadelpia on Saturday, July 29, 2023!Black Reverence Chair is a joy and affirmation ritual created by Abdul-Aliy in 2016 following the state murder of Philando Castille. After the heightened inundation of images, videographic evidence, and social media archiving of grief and despair regarding Black Lives, Abdul-Aliy wondered what would it do for us to have a ritual event that gives reverence to us while we live? What might this spiritual technology of collective and individual affirmation make possible for us, in this world? We invite Black community members to join this ritual across sites of Black memory and futurity for the strengthening of communal joy, affirmation and witnessing. This project presented with generous support from Black Spatial Relics, The Museum of Black Joy, and The Gran Varones Storytelling Project._________Anew conjuring: Stirring Up Black Virtuosic HopeArtist and scholar Dr. Omi Osun Joni L Jones names virtuosity as “the paradox of humility and fearlessness” in her work Theatrical Jazz: Performance, Àṣẹ, and the Power of the Present Moment. Black radical performance makers are rooted in what Jones refers to as the practices of ensemble and solo based-virtuosity. Black radical performance makers know when spirit is calling us forward for moments of virtuosic practice to be lights and beacons in our communities. These calls are a series of calls from and to the wilderness to gather, remember and dream. In this convening space, we are making a new thing together. We are conjuring ourselves and our conspiration anew. This gathering is a space for a stirring up of a new hope, inspired entirely by the study of our ancestral and living leaders who have built for themselves and their communities a daily practice of Black virtuosic hope. Both digital and in-person the events of this convening move with and through The Colored Girls Museum, The Discovery Center and as a ritual caravan across the city of Philadelphia. Featuring Dr. Omi Osun Joni L Jones, Awilda Sterling Duprey, Sonja Dumas, AZ Espinoza, nikolai mckenzie ben rema, Monèt Marshall, Candice D’Meza, LaRissa Rogers, Arielle John, Germaine Ingram, Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, Hollerin’ Space and many others,  this convening is a constellation of artist talks, ceremonies, a digital performance showcase and varied conjures/facilitations on Black virtuosic hope building in Philadelphia and beyond with virtual and in-person programming from July 27-30th. _________Black Spatial Relics is a supporter, convener and funder of Black radical performance, founded and directed by Arielle Julia Brown.
