Open Studios with Diedrick Brackens and Jordan Parks
Join Indigo Arts Alliance’s July Artists in Residence Diedrick Brackens and Jordan Parks in exploring how they merge image making, textiles, and the natural world into their creative practices. Diedrick's masterful wielding of fiber to create woven tapestries and Jordan’s use of printmaking to bring new perspectives on the natural world around us will inspire audiences to ponder the role of artists in community. Attendees will have the opportunity to see the artists’ process and are invited to see the world from their lens. At the heart of Indigo Arts Alliance’s mission is our Artist Residency programs, which provides a creative environment for the production of artwork in all media across disciplines to global and local Black and Brown artists. We activate our mission by creating opportunities for critical feedback, relationship building and increased awareness of creative practices and resources. This program is free, open to all, and takes place at the Indigo Arts Alliance Studio in Portland, ME.
Learn More:
Diedrick Brackens is an LA-based textile artist, from Mexia, Texas. Brackens received his Masters of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA. His work is included in the permanent collections of various institutions, including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA.Jordan Park’s work fosters conversations about climate and environmental impacts, engaging people who may not have otherwise connected with southern Maine islands and waters. Her passion for engaging communities with Maine’s coastal landscape stemmed from her experiences in environmental and outdoor education. After four years of guiding sea kayak expeditions in Casco Bay, Jordan wanted to share these experiences with people who did not often find themselves spending time on the water. Jordan’s art educates and challenges individuals to consider new perspectives in environments not familiar to them. Her leadership is an example of how the climate movement can expand by connecting people to outdoor spaces through the arts.Indigo Arts Alliance is a place where freedom of expression and personal transformation through creativity is encouraged. Indigo Arts Alliance embodies a Black-led, multiracial approach to the rich intersections of citizenship, community-building, and creativity. More than ever, our world needs people who can help us imagine more compassionate, generous, and welcoming human societies. Indigo does that work. It is a great gift to the Portland community, to the region, and to our nation!Indigo Arts Alliance is rooted in two principles:- Art is a key resource for healthy human communities. It should be cultivated and celebrated.- Artists play a unique role in strengthening our multiracial democracy. We need their vision and inspiration to help build a more humane, inclusive, and just world.
