Clyde Powers

This evening of interactive storytelling, music, and food is inspired by a study out of <A HREF="http://shared.web.emory.edu/emory/news/releases/2010/03/children-benefit-if-they-know-about-their-relatives-study-finds.html#.XURbSy2ZPVo" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Emory University</A>, called the “Do You Know” scale.  Children were asked a series of questions such as Do you know some lessons your parents learned from good or bad experiences? The more answers kid knew, the more they also showed greater levels of emotional well-being.  If family members can experience these kinds of health benefits, what might happen if friends, acquaintances, and even co-workers engaged in the experience of deep listening and the sharing of important personal stories?   
Educators from the <A HREF="https://www.vermontfolklifecenter.org" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Folklife Center</A> will get the evening started by introducing guests to an ethnographic approach to interviewing, which emphasizes the importance of perspective-taking.  Michigan chef, Mario Dominguez Hernandez, will be preparing and serving several courses of Mexican fusion cuisine throughout the event, including lamb barbacoa, al pastor, and cauliflower tacos served with golden raisins, jalapenos, and cucumber mint lime salsa.   
A musical meditation of original sounds will follow.  Electronic musician and choral composer, Clyde Powers, will be joined by experimental and jazz fusion guitarist, <A HREF="http://www.danielleoh.net" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Danielle O’Hallisey</A>; multi-instrumentalist, Dave Simpson; and Debbie Patton and Marcia Brewster, singers in the Burlington ensemble, <A HREF="https://socialbandorg.wordpress.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Social Band</A>.  This quintet will journey through improvised and ambient sounds into three-part a cappella compositions written for the occasion. Songs will touch on themes of inner transformation and precious moments preserved by time.
During the final phase of the evening, guests will be offered the opportunity to enter a Story Booth in which to share and record their own stories.  These digitized recordings will be shared with the storytellers after the event. 
This event is supported by a generous contribution from <A HREF="https://www.burlingtoncityarts.org/BCACommunityFund" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Burlington City Arts’ Community Fund</A>, with additional support from the Folklife Center, <A HREF="http://ofsound.community" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Community of Sound</A>, <A HREF="https://www.mainstreetlanding.com/performing-arts-center/index/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Main Street Landing</A>, the Champlain Senior Center, and <A HREF="https://enjoyburlington.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Burlington Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront</A>.  Graphic design and artistic wizardry provided by Anne Kellogg; sound and light engineering by <A HREF="https://www.benjaminpmayock.com" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Benjamin Mayock</A>; event photography by Patty Breneman; and consultation, interviews, photography, and wisdom by Mary Rizos.
