Join Word is Bond for a special celebration of Juneteenth, with two limited editions of our popular In My Shoes walking torus! For our brand new Lower Albina Tour, join us at 1 pm as we embark on a journey through the heart of the Historic Albina neighborhood. This tour will highlight Harriet Tubman Middle School, the reclaiming of lost land, and the recent pledged investment of <a href="https://www.opb.org/article/2023/04/24/phil-knight-nike-billionaire-400-million-black-portland-albina/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">$400 Million by Phil Knight</a>. Discover the historical significance of this area and gain a deeper understanding of its cultural heritage.As part of the tour, you will also have the opportunity to learn about Juneteenth, an important milestone in African American history. Hear excerpts from historic speeches, including Frederick Douglas's powerful address, "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" These enlightening moments will deepen your appreciation for the struggle and resilience of the Black community.Both tours are on a sliding scale of $25 with funds raised going to support our upcoming trip to Ghana in West Africa on July 2nd. No attendeses will be turned away based on their ability to pay. We will also be collecting supplies to bring with us to Ghana which include gently used clothes, educational supplies including books, pens, and art supplies, and gently used technology including cell phones, tablets, and laptops. All supplies that we cannot take will be donated to local charities and organizations.

Whether you call it Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or the country's second Independence Day, Juneteenth is one of the most important anniversaries in our nation's history.On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, who had fought for the Union, led a force of soldiers to Galveston, Texas, to deliver a very important message: The war was finally over, the Union had won, and it now had the manpower to enforce the end of slavery.The announcement came two months after the effective conclusion of the Civil War, and even longer since President Abraham Lincoln had first signed the Emancipation Proclamation, but many enslaved Black people in Texas still weren't free, even after that day.
