Exploring the Mycoverse: Screening of Symbiotic Earth & Lynn Margulis

What isExploring the Mycoverse? It's afungi-focusedcommunity education group exploring the many ways fungi can teach us about the inextricable interconnectedness of all life. The group regularly meets to discuss fungi media such as texts, books, articles, films, and podcasts!

Exploring the Mycoverse Presents – A Screening of Symbiotic Earth
“Life on Earth is such a good story you cannot afford to miss the beginning... Beneath our superficial differences, we are all of us walking communities of bacteria. The world shimmers, a pointillist landscape made of tiny living beings.” – Lynn MargulisThis month we will be taking a journey through the work of evolutionary biologist visionary Lynn Margulis, who popularized our understanding of symbiosis and its role in evolution as well as championed the five-kingdom classification – granting fungi their own kingdom of life. Before the screening, we suggest you take a look at the free Symbiotic Earth Study Guide prepared by Lynn's son Dorian Sagan and the director of the film. About the film:Symbiotic Earth explores the life and ideas of scientific rebel Lynn Margulis who challenged entrenched theories of male-dominated science. As a young scientist in the 1960s, Margulis was ridiculed when she first proposed that symbiosis – when organisms live and work together — was a key driver of evolution, but she persisted. Through numerous collaborations, she caused a seismic shift in our understanding of life.Margulis’ symbiotic narrative presents an alternative to the destructive worldview that has led to climate change and extreme capitalism. With James Lovelock (who she met here in Pasadena), she developed the Gaia Theory that all life is interconnected and interdependent. Her vision offers bold insights into health, society, and nature, and inspires creative approaches to our pressing environmental and social crises.View the trailer here.~~~The Mycoverse will continue discussing Lynn Margulis later in June via the article, Queer Theory for Lichens which explores Lynn Margulis's concept of symbiogenesis. The article asks: if we have never been human – if we are all composites like lichens – then what does this mean for sexuality? If you are unable to attend, the film is screening on demand on Vimeo."Lynn Margulis's name is as synonymous with symbiosis as Charles Darwin's is with evolution" – science historian Jan Sapp.>>>Join our mycelial network:

Sign up for our Substack email newsletter.

Follow Exploring the Mycoverse on instagram.
