Exhibition Title: Open Your Eyes &amp; Look WithinExhibition Statement:Jazz has arguably been one of the most honest and impactful genres to experience. Its rhythm and improv are constantly colliding with emotion and what’s left is raw expression. Open Your Eyes And Look Within revisits the coexistence of painting and Jazz, and it’s this relationship that Chicago-based painter Cedric Alexander Thurman has embarked their recent work from. With several works titled after his favorite Jazz songs, the scale and technique Thurman used for his works resemble the boisterous sound and rhythm of the genre. Drawing inspiration from Sam Gilliam, Norman Lewis, Jackson Pollock and others, Thurman has found voice and individuality within the field of Abstract expressionism. As the music comes to a halt and the last stroke is made, we can find and appreciate his own rhythm, imagery, and noise created throughout his work. SPONSORED BY HALF ACRE BREWAbout the Artist: Cedric Alexander ThurmanAs a multidisciplinary artist from Chicago, my work encompasses painting, photography, film, curation, and art direction. My gestural abstract paintings are an intimate dialogue between my unconscious mind and the canvas, expressing emotions that are often difficult to articulate. Inspired by luminaries such as Norman Lewis, Sam Gilliam and Julie Mehretu, I aim to push the boundaries of traditional art forms and explore innovative ways to tell stories.In my photography and film work, I strive to capture the raw, emotional, and deeply human nuances of the world around me. Through my curation and art direction, I showcase the work of other unique artists, designing spaces that inspire and provoke thought.Ultimately, my art is a reflection of my innermost thoughts and emotions. I seek to connect with others on a deeper level, evoking feeling and inspiring contemplation. By capturing the essence of life around me, I hope to spark conversations and challenge viewers to look at the world and themselves with new eyes.
