Coming In: Conversations with Black LGBTQ Elders in Harlem | Symposium 2023

Culture Pushis an arts organization that creates programs to nurture artists and other creatives who are approaching common problems through hands-on civic participation and imaginative problem-solving.The mission of Culture Push is to create a lively exchange of ideas between many different communities; artists and non-artists, professional practitioners and laypeople, across generations, neighborhoods, and cultures. We support the process of creating new modes of thinking and doing and serves a diverse community of creative people. Our programs focus on collaboration and group learning through active, participatory experiences, and appear in many different locations, taking many different forms.

Culture Push

An intergenerational space for Black LBGTQ people to get to know and connect with one another in Harlem through storytelling and archive.

SAGE Center Harlem

The goal of this workshop is to create an intergenerational space for Black LBGTQ people to get to know and connect with one another in Harlem. We will share, document and archive our stories in the form of a zine, a collective alter and an oral history project. Participants are asked bring photos of loved ones &amp; or themselves with a description/story of the photo, poems and short stories which will be collected for the creation of a zine. The stories and/or poems can be on any topic, although some examples might be: love/intimacy, community, identity, “coming into” (rather than “coming out”), dating, aging, Black diasporic experience, family/chosen family, partnerships.There will also be a workshop table with art supplies for people to create and share with folks around them as well as an altar set up for people to give offerings as well as to add photos of loved ones that people have lost. Yanni will also be asking people to participate in short one on one interviews in which participants will be asked questions regarding their experiences as LGBTQ people living in Harlem. Both the zine and oral history interviews will become part of the archive being compiled as part of Yanni&#x27;s Black Utopian Fellowship with Culture Push.
