The next installment of The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center's 2023 Lecture Series: THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMPANY TOWN

Join us as Dr. David Benac presents a fascinating exploration of the ways company towns have evolved in response to geography, technology and culture while retaining a core identity as structures that facilitate control and extract wealth for outside forces. The discussion will span from colonization, with the main part of that story beginning in Michigan with poor organization, transitioning to the South where the stereotypical model of the company town develops, then moves to the Pacific Northwest where labor shortages and new ideas of control create a superficially less oppressive version of the model. The expansion of the story covers proto-industrial communities like Lowell in MA, incorporates the large-industrial operations like Pullman and mining towns, then bring the entire idea to the present with strategies used in places like Kalamazoo and plans for new company towns by people like Bezos and Musk.Dr. Benac is an Associate Professor of History, Public History coordinator, and history internship supervisor at Western Michigan University. His specialties include Historic Preservation, Architectural History and Environmental History. Dr. Benac received his B A in History from Michigan State University, his MA in Public History from Indiana University and his PhD in History from the University of Missouri-Columbia.Can&#x27;t make it in person?
