Reaching Out, Binding Together | Symposium 2023

Culture Pushis an arts organization that creates programs to nurture artists and other creatives who are approaching common problems through hands-on civic participation and imaginative problem-solving.The mission of Culture Push is to create a lively exchange of ideas between many different communities; artists and non-artists, professional practitioners and laypeople, across generations, neighborhoods, and cultures. We support the process of creating new modes of thinking and doing and serves a diverse community of creative people. Our programs focus on collaboration and group learning through active, participatory experiences, and appear in many different locations, taking many different forms.

Show Don't Tell 2023

Experience the Culture Push Fellows and Associated Artists' work at the 6th Show Don’t Tell Symposium. Engage in workshops, screenings, and presentations intersecting imagination, social change, and civic participation.

For Reaching Out, Binding Together, Maho Ogawa, Emily Bass, and Tara Kesavan and Indranil Choudhury (with Aditi Dey) share their research through installation, performance and workshop.Maho Ogawa (Associated Artist) presents The Japanese Tea and Ritual Room, an interactive performance installation which connects Japanese Tea Ceremony, Zen meditation, and personal ritual and aims to help people find peace through the custom and philosophy of Tea Rituals. The layering of personal ritual is made through collaboration with the general public through a survey about personal rituals conducted at different times of day. Periodic activations performed by Ogawa with Annie Wang.P﻿erformances at 5:00 and 7:30 PM, installation on view 5-8 PMThe People’s Immunology Committee convenes a post-patriarchal present where cells speak with and through the bodies that hold them. Featuring a performance, workshop and interactive exhibit workshop. Emily Bass (Associated Artist), creator of The Dendron Project, will lead this event. The Dendron Project is a hybrid experiment that uses text, art, gesture, individual and collective practice to render questions, ideas and understandings of the immune system that are alternatives to the commodified, militarized, capitalist science of pandemic times. The committee meeting will include a slide talk by Emily Bass, the Principal Investigator of the Dendron Project, with remarks by the Dendritic Cell. Participants will have the chance and choice to make, play, question and contribute to the project of making a people’s immunology.P﻿erformance presentation and workshop starting at 6:00PM, interactive exhibit open 5-8. This oral history project and installation aims to research urban gardening practices within the Bangladeshi community in New York. In neighborhoods like Jamaica in Queens and Sunset Park in Brooklyn, residential homes are often used to grow seasonal produce, turning backyards and open spaces into lush vegetable gardens each year. For the Show Don't Tell Symposium, the group will introduce a work in progress based on oral histories from this community. Later this summer, these audio stories will go on to form part of a larger public exhibition dedicated to the project.Installation on view 5-8 PM

Maho Ogawa is a Japanese born multidisciplinary movement artist working in NYC since 2011. Her work has delved into building a choreographic language based on nuances and isolated movements of the body that she has built a database, “Minimum Movement Catalog”. She uses body, video, text, computer programming, and audience-participatory methods to discover how relationships and the environment affect individual bodies consciously and subconsciously. Her recent works are in part decontextualizing and researching minimum movement found in Japanese tea ceremony rituals as well as cinema. She's currently working on public events inspired by Japanese tea rituals to build new methods of thinking about “silence,” providing a quiet but active mindset to heal and unite the community. The aim is to empower the erased cultures by dismantling oppressed body gestures and their context as an archive and audience-participating event, fighting for cultural equality in nonviolent ways.Indranil Choudhury is a media artist working in sound, sculpture and video. He teaches at Hunter College and Marymount Manhattan College. He is a candidate for an MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College, CUNY.Aditi Dey is a PhD student in the department of Politics at the New School for Social Research. She works on urban history and politics, looking at Indian cities but with a wider focus on the cities of the Global South. She has previously worked as a researcher in Bangalore and Mumbai. She holds an MA and BA in History.Tara Aliya Kesavan is an artist working across drawing, film and sculpture. She teaches in the Communication and Media Arts department in Marymount Manhattan College. She also works as the Programs Coordinator at UnionDocs. She is a candidate for an MFA in Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College, CUNY.Emily Bass is a writer, visual artist, historian, and activist focusing on pandemics, the forces that perpetuate them, and the movements within bodies and in communities that recognize and resist them. Her book, To End a Plague: America’s Fight to Defeat AIDS in Africa (PublicAffairs, 2021), was a finalist for the 2022 Lionel Gelber Prize. A 2022–23 Culture Push Associated Artist, Bass received a Fulbright journalism fellowship in Uganda and a New York Public Library Martin Duberman Visiting Research Fellowship for her work documenting the history of transnational AIDS activism. She is a 2022-23 Creative Capital Awardee and a Culture Push Associated Artist. Collaborative action to redistribute power is central to her practice as an activist and inquiry as an artist and writer.
