Professional Development focused on culturally sustaining practices with Lorena Escoto Germán, author of Textured Teaching

<h2>Join MCELA for this exciting summer professional development opportunity! All sessions are presented by author Lorena Escoto Germán.</h2><p><em>Lorena Escoto Germán is a Dominican American educator focused on anti-racist and antibias work in education. She is a two-time nationally awarded educator and author of </em>The Anti Racist Teacher: Reading Instruction Workbook<em> in addition to being a co-founder of the groups #DisruptTexts and Multicultural Classroom. Lorena is the director of pedagogy at EduColor and Chair of NCTE&#x27;s Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English. </em></p><h3>Anti racist and anti bias teaching are not simply conceptual. They are also praxis; how you teach your subject matter, how you design learning experiences, how you relate with students, how you move about in your institution, and more.</h3><h3>It is through these practices that we work on healing as an outcome of education. Through Textured Teaching (Germán 2021), an innovative approach, you&#x27;ll find answers that don&#x27;t sacrifice increased engagement, a striving toward justice, and acute skill-building.</h3><p><strong>Participants will:</strong></p><ul><li>Understand and name the four traits of Textured Teaching</li><li>Identify practices they can implement immediately to bring back a culturally sustaining pedagogy</li><li>Workshop ideas for what to do in their classrooms, schools, and roles</li></ul><p>In this workshop, participants will be able to move from theory into action and see sample lessons and units they can build their own ideas upon to be both encouraged and equipped to support students with skill building all while working toward making our nation a better place.</p><h3>The first 25 people to register for this professional development opportunity will receive a free copy of Germán&#x27;s book <em>Textured Teaching</em>!</h3><p><strong>This professional development opportunity will take place over four sessions:</strong></p><ul><li>Session 1- Tuesday, August 15: Setting the Context for Textured Teaching</li><li>Session 2 - Thursday, August 17: Textured Teaching is Student-Driven, Community-Centered, and Interdisciplinary</li><li>Session 3 - Tuesday, August 22: Textured Teaching is Experiential and Flexible</li><li>Session 4 - Thursday, August 24 Bringing Textured Teaching Home</li></ul><p>One ticket purchased registers you for all four sessions.</p><p><strong>Each session is online,  begins at 10:00 AM and ends at 11:30 AM. Ideally, participants will have the book in order to follow along. </strong><em>Participants who attend all 4 sessions will receive 8 Contact Hours.</em></p><p></p>
