The Area Planning and Services Committee on Aging with Lifelong Disabilities (APSC) invites you to our next workshop. Please Join Us on June 7, 2023, at the Deep Run Recreation Center for an in-person workshop. The EssentialsOur June workshop is aimed at providing valuable insights and practical strategies for individuals who support those with lifelong disabilities. Attendees may include Support Coordinators, Direct Support Professionals, Guardians, Case Managers, Parents, Caregivers, and Families.The 2023 APSC Workshop: Tentative Agenda8:30-9:00 Registration Opens9:00-9:15 Welcome and Overview of the APSC9:15-10:45: Introduction to Person Centered Practices with Dawn Machonis. Through the development of a one-page person centered description, participants will be introduced to fundamental person-centered values and skills. 10:45-11:00 Refreshment Break.11:00 – 11:45: Nutrition and Aging with Nelly Castillo of The Virginia Home. The presentation covers nutritional needs and nutrition risks of older individuals. Nutrition considerations for individuals with disabilities and special health needs will be discussed with the goal of promoting health and wellness. 11:45 – 12:30 Lunch and Networking12:30 – 1:45: “Medical and adaptive fitness: Exercise and movement for all abilities” with Abbey Colley, M.S., ACSM EP and Alex Tharin, ACSM EP of Sheltering Arms. The presentation will focus on recommendations and strategies on how exercise can improve overall health and wellness, activities of daily living, and leisure activities. Exercise recommendations and techniques to improve strength, endurance and balance for older adults with disabilities will be demonstrate. Movement safety and fall prevention strategies for individuals and caregivers will also be provided.1:45 – 2:00: Break2:00 – 3:30: &quot;Ten Steps to Serving Your Clients Through Guardianship Advocacy.&quot; with Erica Wood, Virginia Center on Aging Board and (ret) former Assistant Director of the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. The workshop will highlight ten practical steps that IDD service providers can take to advocate for their clients. The ten points will include: understanding the basics about guardianship; identifying approaches less restrictive than guardianship; promoting the rights of their clients during a guardianship proceeding; and ensuring accountability once a guardian has been appointed. 3:30-3:45 Review, Evaluation, and door prizes$30.00 admission fee covers refreshments, lunch and training materials for all attendees.
