Learn Midsummer Rusalka and Ivan Kupala ritual songs from Ukraine from master singers and teachers Inna Kovtun and Nadia Tarnawsky.

Inna Kovtun and Nadia Tarnawsky return to the Kitka Institute to lead two IN PERSON workshops focusing on traditional Rusalka (June 17) and Ivan Kupala (June 18) songs traditionally sung in Ukraine during the late spring and early summer. These workshop is open to singers of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and levels of experience. All songs will be taught in the oral tradition. Ability to read Ukrainian or musical notation is not required and some time in each workshop will be spent on creating an authentic Ukrainian village sound appropriate to each song’s region of origin.ABOUT THE TEACHERSINNA KOVTUN is a folklorist and ethnographer, a researcher and collector of folklore traditions, a performer, and an educator. She is the highly regarded musical and artistic director of the “Rozhanytsya” folk ensemble based in Kyiv, the lead vocalist of the international project “EDK”, and the lead singer of the ethno-rock band “Astarta”. Inna is also the Deputy General Director of the Kyiv Municipal Brass Orchestra. She has performed and given workshops all around the world.NADIA TARNAWSKY received a Fulbright award in 2017 and has taught Ukrainian village style singing in workshops for the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance in New York, the Kitka Women&#x27;s Ensemble, Village Harmony, and Dunava, among others. In 2011, she was granted a Traditional Arts Fellowship from Artist Trust and an Artist Support Residency from Jack Straw Productions. Nadia sang with Ensemble Hilka of New York in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster in Ukraine.T﻿his workshop series is supported, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The California Arts Council, and the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program.
