Judi’s Room

Named after celebrated human rights activist Judi Chamberlin, Judi’s Room is a free Zoom event presented jointly by MindFreedom International (MFI) and I Love You, Lead On.  First Wednesday of the month, 6 PM on Zoom.

I Love You, Lead On and MindFreedom International present Judi’s Room - Judy Heumann, Sister to us all.Judi’s Room—Judith Heumann—May 3, 2023–6pm Eastern, 5pm Central, 4pm Mountain, 3pm Pacific.All are welcome. The event is free. Donations welcome. Sign language interpretation provided. Susan Musante, MindFreedom International board member, was introduced to the work and advocacy of Judith Heumann by a friend and colleague, Carol Roberson, who (like Judy) used a wheelchair after having contracted polio as a child. The two individuals and their families forged the way to inclusion into public schools and higher education after having been offered minimal home public education and limited college options. The breakthrough into the public school system was a huge achievement and one of the underpinnings for disability rights. (Carol Roberson we lost last year, another amazing advocate and friend of Judy Heumann)For the past three months we have honored the lives of disability rights activists including Judi Chamberlain, Celia Brown and Sally Zinman. It is fitting that we include Judy Heumann in this series as she is widely regarded as the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement”. Judy Heumann founded Disability in Action, was instrumental in the Centers for Independent Living development and helped with legislation that became the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the development of the American with Disabilities Act. In 2010 Judy was appointed by President Barak Obama as a special advisor on disability issues for the US State Department.If you want a real picture of Judy and friends watch Crip Camp. We will be showing that film on May 17th same time. In her own words “Inclusion for me means belonging….respect…the ability to go to school with non-disabled children…Inclusion for me means travelling on trains and buses, earning a wage. Inclusion for me means dignity.”
