2023 Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation Surf Event

Brooks Adaptive Sports and Recreation will be hosting the 2023 Adaptive Surf Event to allow those individuals living with disability in our community the opportunity to surf safely with the help of volunteers.  We will provide up to 72 surfers the opportunity to spend 30 minutes surfing alongside a team of skilled volunteers.

REMINDERS:

• Surfers will NOT be required to be there all day.  You will be given an assigned time that you will need to be there to register and an estimated time that you will be in the water.  You are more than welcome to stay all day, but it will not be necessary should you choose not to.
• Waivers will be signed electronically at registration, then only those who are NEW to our Program will need to physically complete a waiver the day of. 

VOLUNTEERING:

All volunteers will be asked to sign up through SignUpGenius this year.  A link is included below.  You will be able to sign up for a specific team as well as the position you would like to fill.  We are asking those who would like to volunteer as a group, to please do so when you go to the site.  We are allowing volunteers to do that on their own this year in order to increase efficiency overall.

THINGS TO KNOW:

• You do NOT need to know how to swim to participate.  Our event is open to anyone living with a physical or visual impairment, and we have equipment and volunteers to ensure safety and success regardless of your ability. 
• We will have all of the equipment necessary for a great day!  The only thing required is you!
• We will have snacks in the morning, lunch and also plenty of water! 

FAQs: 

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

There are no age requirements nor ID needed at registration.  

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

We will not be providing transportation to this event, so please plan accordingly.  You may either park in the municipal lot behind Sneakers (this is NO longer free, unfortunately, and details about the parking will be provided once we have all the correct information).  We will also be providing a shuttle from a remote location (more information will be provided at a later time) that you may utilize.  In addition, you may use any public parking at the beach that you find convenient.  There will be a police officer in the roundabout at the end of Beach Blvd., and you will NOT be able to park there for any length of time.  This is a safety precaution due to our proximity to the Lifeguard Station.  Please do not plan to drop off/pick up in that location if you are not able to do so very quickly.

What can I bring into the event?

Our event is held at a public beach, so we must follow not only the guidelines set forth by our Program, but also by the City of Jacksonville Beach.  There will be NO alcohol allowed.  Participants, family members, friends and spectators are encouraged to bring:

• Towels
• Sunscreen
• Chair
• Dry Clothes
• Anything else that makes a day at the beach fun for you!
