About this event

Welcome to the 61st Annual Sukiyaki Dinner at the Yakima Buddhist Church! Join the Yakima Valley Japanese Community in a celebration of local Japanese heritage, history, and culture! Enjoy fresh-cooked sukiyaki with friends, and a taiko drum performance by The School of Taiko at 1pm.

Beef or vegetarian options available. Proceeds support the Yakima Buddhist Church facilities, which have been used as a cultural and community space by the Yakima Valley Japanese community for nearly 100 years.

While purchasing pre-sale tickets on eventbrite is convenient for you and makes planning easiest for us, please note that eventbrite charges a small service fee for every ticket purchased. If you would like to attend the event but avoid this service fee, the following local businesses are also selling pre-sale tickets in person: Dunbar Jewelers and Yakima Valley Museum. Tickets will also be available at the door day-of. All in-person purchase options are cash-only.

Thank you! We look forward to sharing a meal with you :)

Frequently asked questions

What is sukiyaki?

Sukiyaki (すき焼き) is a popular Japanese hot pot dish that is often enjoyed with friends! We slowly simmer thin-sliced beef alongside vegetables, noodles, and mushrooms in a shallow pot. The soup broth is rich and bursting with sweet, salty, and savory flavor. A vegetarian option is available as well.

What is taiko?

In Japanese, taiko (太鼓) literally means "drum," though the term has also come to refer to the art of Japanese drumming known as kumi-daiko. Powerful and evocative, taiko was used predominantly in the military centuries ago — but has evolved in Buddhist and Shinto religions to be a sacred instrument.

What is the Yakima Buddhist Church?

Early Japanese pioneers played a major role in the history of the Yakima Valley by clearing sagebrush and planting nurseries, orchards, and row crops. In 1930, they founded the Yakima Buddhist Church in Wapato, where it has been a part of the Yakima Valley community and history for nearly a century.

What is the Dine-In Seating option?

Limited indoor and outdoor dine-in seating will be available throughout the event. Feel free to grab a friend, grab a table, and join our community for a meal at the historic Yakima Buddhist Church! Taiko drummers from the School of Taiko will be performing in the outdoor seating area at 1pm.

What is the Drive-Through option?

Boxed meals can be picked up to-go from the comfort of your car! A convenient option for anyone who wants to enjoy this annual fresh-cooked community meal, but doesn’t have time to stay for the full event. Present your ticket(s) at the drive-through, and your meal(s) will be brought to your car.

What is the Take-Out option?

Another convenient to-go option for anyone looking to grab a meal to enjoy elsewhere, take-out is available for in-person pickup as well. No car needed! Just walk in, present your ticket(s), and leave with your fresh-cooked meal(s).

Can I change my dining method after buying my ticket?

We know plans change. While selling three different types of tickets helps us prepare for this event, the most important thing to us is that you get to enjoy your meal in the way that is best for you! Just let us know when you arrive if you want to do something other than what’s on your ticket.

Can I buy tickets at the door?

Yes! We appreciate pre-sale tickets as it helps us plan ahead to have enough meals, but if you decide day-of to join us without a pre-sale ticket, or have a last-minute friend who wants to come with you, tickets will be available at the door. We would love to see you there :)
