This workshop explores practices that support photographers and artists in effectively communicating the significance of their work.

Wednesday, June 7, 14, &amp; 21, 20236﻿:00 - 8:00 pmPhotographers and artists often struggle to effectively communicate what they do, why they do it, and why it is important. Yet, in this age of communication, artists are expected to post on social media, write artist statements, contextualize websites, and give presentations about their work. Understanding that everything we create is, in some form, an autobiographical extension and a materialization of how we perceive and respond to the world around us, this three-session workshop explores practices that support photographers and artists in effectively communicating the significance of their work. It proceeds from the premise that an individual’s experience is, in some part, shared by all; that what motivates one resonates with another. So, what we create is of value when shared, and of greater value when shared with skill.Over the course of three evenings, this workshop will cover what inspires us as photographers and artists to create (your “why”), how the tools and processes we use are material expressions of that (your “what”), and the tailoring of your message to the purpose and capabilities of a specific platform (your “how”), while understanding each platforms’ limitations. This workshop is participatory and interactive, with open discussions, break-outs, and sharing.What to bring: Something to write with, either digital or pen and paper, and three examples of your work, either in digital or analog form.Charles Purvis spent 20 years as one of the top studio photographers in New York City, creating ground-breaking imagery for a wide variety of internationally known clients. In addition to commercial assignments, he has created a large body of innovative photographic art inspired by a relentless curiosity and a desire to uncover the creative potential of the photographic medium.Through the years, Charles has taught and mentored hundreds of people in photography, art, and creative expression. He understands the necessity of personal healing and he is passionate in supporting people to realize their full creative potential.
