Affordable Housing Month 2023/May Policy in Action @Home: Breaking Down Barriers to Racial &amp; Economic Equity in Access to ADU ConstructionS﻿panish translation will be available for this event. This PIA will be an hour and a half long.We will discuss how Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) can provide much-needed additional homes in our communities, and an important source of revenue for lower-income homeowners. Recent research from the Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC Berkeley reveals racial and socioeconomic disparities in homeowners who can build ADUs, with barriers including cost, access to financing, and navigating complex local processes. Join the conversation, as we discuss the disparities and actions local jurisdictions can take to remove barriers to ADU construction for lower-income homeowners of color, along with broader recommendations to increase ADU construction overall.Speakers•	Muhammad T. Alameldin — Policy Associate for the Terner Center. He brings the Center’s innovative research to inform housing policy at the local, state, and federal levels. •	Iliana Nicholas — leads the CANDO ADU program at the East Palo Alto Community Alliance and Neighborhood Development Organization (EPACANDO). SV@Home’s Policy in Action @ Home series is a monthly, informal brownbag discussion convening Housers to engage on hot housing topics. Every month, we select a topic or current event, bring in an expert to give a brief presentation or interview, and then open up the discussion to ask questions, float new ideas, and identify potential areas for shared action.SV@Home strives to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully.
