Free Mental Health First Aid Hosted by OVP

LA County Office of Violence Prevention is hosting FOUR free Mental Health First Aid Training Events this May.

Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack—but too few of us would know how to respond if we saw a young person having a panic attack or if we were worried about their alcoholism. Youth Mental Health First Aid is a training program to help adults who work with or care for youth better understand how to identify and respond to mental health and substance abuse problems in youth. This skill is an important tool to help us make difference in a young person's life through a lens of healing, compassion, and support.In partnership with the Department of Mental Health, the Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) is hosting a FREE Youth Mental Health First Aid training session for community members in the greater Compton area. This is a part of a greater effort at OVP to provide opportunities for community healing and social connection.Please note that this training is limited to participants age 23 and up and will focus on providing mental health support to youth ages 12-18. However, many of the themes discussed can also be applied to adults.This training will cover:- Common signs of mental health and/or substance use challenges, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.- Interacting with a youth in crisis and connecting to help.- Overview of trauma, mental illness, substance use, and the impact of social media and bullying.Registration is limited and required for participation. As spots are limited, we would like to prioritize faith-based partners in the greater Compton area. Participants must attend the entire session for certification.SPACE IS LIMITED! LUNCH IS PROVIDED!
