Climate Justice Forum

Climate Justice Conversations is the fourth rendition of the UCLA Climate Justice Forum, a one-night speaker panel hosted collaboratively by Environmentalists of Color Collective (ECC), the UC Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI), and The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF). This year the Climate Justice Forum is being transformed into a series of 10 events across the month of April highlighting our theme: resilience.

<h3>Be a part of <a href="https://ecc-ucla.weebly.com/cjc.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Climate Justice Conversation&#x27;s</a> summit event and now four-year-long tradition, the 2023 Climate Justice Forum, a speaker panel and evening reception.</h3>

The night will start off with a reception filled with Thai food from NIGHT + MARKET, mocktails, and live music by student artists. During the first portion of the event, we will be hearing from our keynote speaker, Jason Foster. Jason is the President &amp; Chief Operating Officer of <a href="https://destinationcrenshaw.la/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Destination Crenshaw</a> an open-air museum along Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles dedicated to preserving the history and culture of African Americans. Prior to Destination Crenshaw, Foster was Director of Strategic Partnerships at <a href="https://www.riverla.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">River LA</a>, where he connected with River LA’s community partners, corporate representatives, and LA County residents to grow civic pride and social responsibility surrounding the LA River.The second portion of the event will feature a conversation centering resilience and environmental justice between Foster and<ul><li>Alesia Montgomery: <a href="https://www.ioes.ucla.edu/person/alesia-montgomery/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Assistant Professor at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability</a> (IoES). Montgomer studies the social and environmental justice concerns of low-income, radicalized communities.</li><li>Annie Mendoza: Sawyer Seminar Fellow on Sanctuary Spaces for the UCLA Luskin Institute on Inequality and Democracy, and <a href="https://luskin.ucla.edu/person/anmarie-mendoza" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">PhD student in Urban Planning</a>. Mendoza is also the Indigenous Waters Program Director for Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples.</li><li>Helen Campbell: Planning Director for <a href="https://councildistrict1.lacity.gov/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Office of LA City Councilmember Eunisses Hernández, CD 1</a> and Board Member of <a href="https://www.mas.la/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">LA Más</a>, a community organization building collective power in Northeast Los Angeles. Campbell previously served as a Senior Planner with the California Governor&#x27;s Office of Planning and Research.</li></ul>The panel will be introduced and moderated by Sebastián Solarte-Caicedo, <a href="https://www.ioes.ucla.edu/person/sebastian-solarte/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">PhD student at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability</a>(IoES) researching how energy policy should be designed to foster community well-being and peace building at a local level. Through our opening speakers and the following conversations, we hope the Climate Justice Forum raises awareness about the contributions that people of color have made to the environmental sustainability movement; reframes conceptions of vulnerable communities; and stimulates critical dialogue about environmental racism and injustice issues and climate resilience at UCLA and beyond. Those who attend will be entered into a Patagonia Worn Wear jacket raffle with 10 winners!

Admission is free, but a ticket is required for each attendee. Ticket does not guarantee entry, come early to secure a seat.
