Project BrOKen: Featuring Dance, Art and a Wellness Fair

We use dance to educate, uplift, and empower communities. Through movement, our work takes audiences on a journey through the emotional landscapes of mental health, addiction, and recovery, leaving them with a sense of empowerment and hope.In addition to being an internationally acclaimed dance organization, two notable programs that have a state, national and international impact include Project BrOKen and the Hip Hop Experience Dance Curriculum (HHE).Project BrOKen is a transformative and evocative curation of workshops, dance performances, guided movement explorations and expressive dance art that explores mental health, addiction and neurodivergence while also depicting hope, healing and recovery.HHE teaches intergenerational Hip Hop authentically, contextually, and experientially. It is implemented with an SEL lens and DEIA+ focus. HHE explores the therapeutic qualities of Hip Hop Dance and María has conducted innovative research in this area that will be published in 2025.

Project BrOKen is a groundbreaking project involving art and dance to benefit individuals and families impacted by mental health, addiction and disabilities. This project is sponsored in part by the Township of Scotch Plains, a 2023 HEART Grant (Union County) and iDance Ministry.T﻿he dance performance will feature internationally renowned dancer and disability activist, Kitty Lunn, as well as dancers from the award winning iDance Ministry dance program.There are three parts to this project which include:1) Expressive Dance Art (featured at an art exhibition on January 16, 2023 and will be displayed on May 20, 2023); 2) a Live Performance and Resource Fair (May 20, 2023) and 3) the creation of a video resource to be used by organizations and schools that serve individuals impacted by mental health, addiction and learning disabilities.T﻿ax deductible donations can be made through Dance New Jersey at the following link to help with this amazing project: https://donorbox.org/idance-ministry
