Ego sum qui sum: A Franco-Flemish Easter

Cappella Martialis (Latin for ‘The Tuesday Singing Group’) coalesced in 2011 as a collective of singers enthused about the lesser-known gems of the early choral tradition from the Baroque and before, particularly the Renaissance and Mediæval periods. Our aims are to sing sacred music liturgically and secular music in historically-informed performance. We are not religiously-affiliated and welcome new singers. Instruments are added as appropriate for the repertoire. We also have a small band for Renaissance and early Baroque instrumental dance music.New singers and instrumentalists with an interest in HIP (Historically-Informed Performance) are always welcome. A free concert of Easter-themed choral music, featuring Renaissance polyphony in historically-informed performance.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, France and the Low Countries were music powerhouses, providing composers, singers, and players for the most important musical establishments all over Europe. With them came a style of polyphonic vocal music that dominated Europe for the next 200 years, making the Franco-Flemish idiom essentially the first ‘International Style’ in music.In the Franco-Flemish Renaissance style, all parts were independent, of equal importance, and each was given beautiful melodies. While Josquin des Pres was the international superstar with his clear minimalist lines, there were many other composers with radically different styles. These included Nicolas Gombert with his maximalist ‘wall of sound’, Jean Richafort with his smooth polyphony, and Orlandus Lassus who specialised in musica reservata, a style of music involving chromaticism and word-painting, to be appreciated by a small, select group of connoisseurs.For this presentation, we feature Gombert’s six-voice Easter motet Ego sum qui sum and Rogier’s Missa Ego sum qui sum based on it, as well as Gombert’s monumental Regina cæli and a selection of other Easter-themed pieces by Franco-Flemish composers of the period. For an extra touch of historical authenticity, we shall be pronouncing the Latin as was done by singers of that time.

Tickets for <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ego-sum-qui-sum-a-franco-flemish-easter-tickets-602211921067" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Saturday 29/4 </a>at St Patrick&#x27;s School Chapel are also available. Note to ticket-holders: as this concert is free seating, please arrive at 7:20pm. Any available seats will be released to walk-ins at 7:25pm.
