The Chinese & the Iron Road Symposium

The Chinese Historical Society of America Museum is the oldest organization in the country dedicated to the interpretation, promotion, and preservation of the social, cultural and political history and contributions of the Chinese in America.CHSA promotes the contributions and legacy of the Chinese in America through its exhibitions, publications, and educational and public programs in the Museum and Learning Center. We are housed in the landmark Julia Morgan-designed Chinatown YWCA building at 965 Clay Street, San Francisco.

Save the date May 18, 2019 for “The Chinese & the Iron Road Symposium”! This day-long event will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the U.S. Transcontinental railroad, and the integral role that Chinese workers played in its construction.
CHSA’s symposium will dedicate a whole day to the latest scholarship about Chinese involvement in the transcontinental railroad. Presentations will include historians Connie Young Yu and Gordon Chang, filmmaker Barre Fong screening Making Tracks: The Philip P. Choy Story, and a special talk by florist Susan Ishkanian who helped put together the Rose Parade float.
This program also serves as the launch for CHSA’s upcoming book, <A HREF="https://chsa.org/shop-chsa/publications/voicesfromtherailroad/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Voices from the Railroad</A>, which has been expanded and updated from its original 2014 edition. Co-edited by Sue Lee and Connie Young Yu, the new book will feature first-hand narratives by nine descendants of Chinese railroad workers.
