Frequently asked questions

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth has also been called: Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Cel-Liberation Day. Juneteenth traces its origins back to Galveston, Texas, where on June 19th, 1865, Union Soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed in the city with news that slaves were free.

How is it celebrated?

There are many ways to celebrate Juneteenth. For some, it’s eating barbecue, shooting fireworks, singing and dancing, going to special church services, gathering at a cookout and sipping on red drinks. For others, it’s shopping only at Black-owned businesses, sharing history, or resting at home.

What should I bring with me?

Attending our events is FREE and easy. We have everything you need at the event including seating, shade areas, water, and food. We recommend that people bring their own water as it will be a hot summer day!

Is the event kid-friendly?

Yes! Our Juneteenth festival is for kids and adults alike. Our vendors offer a wide variety of food and drink options and the entertainment is family friendly. We hope to see you all out there!
