In this 5Rhythms® Heartbeat series, we will dance the path of the wounded healer, transforming our difficulties into our greatest strengths.

The Path of the Wounded Healer: A 5Rhythms® Heartbeat Series With Lucia Horan

The healing path has a trajectory. Gabrielle called this, The Path of The Wounded Healer. It is here that we look closely at our healing process. We mark both where we are and where we want to be. We dance through the five stages of healing in relationship to being the victim, the survivor, the healer, the transformer and eventually the one who rests in compassionate service.

This seven part series will dance us through the shadows, into the gateways of the emotions and will be completed with the dance of emptiness.

It is my belief that our sacred task in life is to transform the most difficult things we have been through into our greatest strengths. These are the stories of our true nature, our resilience, our vulnerability and our strength. It is here one may learn how to move with what is and transform it to what we want it to be.

In the Heartbeat Map, we investigate what is moving through the shores of the heart. Through understanding the relationship of the emotional polarities, we come to respect and appreciate what we have been through. Without fear, we do not experience courage. Without anger, we cannot experience forgiveness. Without love, we cannot experience grief. Without, loss, we cannot experience or appreciate the full spectrum of joy. Without all of these qualities, we cannot know the true nature of compassion.

You are invited to join this journey of movement and awareness, focused on how emotions transform the heart. This map is Gabrielle Roth’s living wisdom. I am here to pass this gift on to you, so it may be carried in your own bones and blood.

Each session will be primarily focused on the 5Rhythms® moving meditation. We will close each movement session with a 10-15 minute seated meditation, focused on one of the Buddhist Heart Practices. Included in the group will be optional sharing and a question and answer period.

5Rhythms® Shadow Dancer

The 5Rhythms® moving meditation teaches mindful awareness of the body. Dancing the shadows invites us to open the gateway to the heart. It is here that we have an opportunity to explore what closes and opens our emotional states.

We will learn how to track energy, where it gets stuck and where it moves, expanding our capacity to sustain present time awareness with all that is.

Light and shadow work identifies how to transform the stuck energies. The study of polarities has the ability to bring great insight. In Flowing, we meet our inertia and transform it into the power of fluid momentum. In Staccato, we transform control and tension into release and action. In Chaos, we face confusion and uncertainty practicing our ability to let go and surrender. In Lyrical, we work with changing distraction into focus and in Stillness, we meet numbness and transform it into connection.

If we do not embrace these energies with full awareness, they often act to sabotage rather than empower us. By embracing the light and shadow of each rhythm, one can better navigate the inner and outer terrain of our emotional and energetic states. This is a practice that views all states of being as pure creative energy. We approach and investigate with an attitude of non-duality, non-judgment and kindness.

5Rhythms®: Flowing Courage

In times of great change many of us are searching for a sense of freedom. Our fear is a primary component that often holds us back from living freely and fully. As victims to life circumstances, how intimate are you with fear? How do you respond when it arises? Have you wanted a practice that will help support you in this relationship? The 5Rhythms offers us just this; a map to understanding the process of how the energy of fear moves and transforms.

We invite you to lean in rather than avoid what is most palpable while living through this Pandemic. Follow your intuition and trusting your instinctual fear to protect you.

The body is an intuitive vehicle. We will work to develop a deeper understanding of how fear both moves and stops us. Through this embodiment you will learn to respond with accuracy, fine tuning your senses.

We will dance ask questions and listen to the bodies answers. The dance floor becomes the mirror of our healing process, reflecting where we are and where we wish to be.

With fear all around us, we can learn how to create safety, live with courage and encourage those around us to do the same.

5Rhythms®: Staccato Forgiveness

In Gabrielle Roth’s own words, “We are the strongest, when we are the most vulnerable.” Join us as we dance into the power of our individual Staccato nature. It is this powerful space that allows us to touch into the strength of our inner vulnerability.

This dance is an investigation into the sacred nature of our healing path. How have you been hurt in this lifetime? How have your boundaries been crossed? As we dance we focus the somatics of healing core wounds. In doing so to face what needs to be accepted and forgiven.

As survivors, we have been asked to over come and heal many things. Where are you in this process? By following the Path of The Wounded Healer, we will honor where we are and align to the next stage of our healing. By practicing acceptance and forgiveness we cultivate the environment for healing to take place.

You are invited to join this circle to hold what should not be held alone. It is here that we excavate the stories of the past into the creativity of the present. From this place we cultivate an environment of healing, joy and peacefulness.

5Rhythms®: Chaos, Grief Dancer

Gabrielle Roth taught, “The only way out, is through”. The rhythm of Chaos invites us to surrender to something larger than our individual selves. Have you been telling yourself to “let go”? Have you been waiting to release the weight and sorrows of your past? The sacred nature of Chaos breaks down barriers and lets these flood gates loose.

The grief of these unprecedented times opens all the suffering held in the body. So how do you move through this grief when it threatens to swallow you? This chaos dance will show you the way to stay grounded and survive it all with authenticity and grace. This dance will allow you to expand the bandwidth and empty what no longer needs to be held in the dam of your heart-space.

For integrated healing to take place we must move our bodies and address the grief on a cellular level. Griefs essential nature is here to do the holy work of washing the heart clean. When this is done, we are left emptied. In time, this empty space in where joy to finds room to re-enter.

We will practice the embodiment of what is already moving naturally through us, so that it can be related to with more ease and grace. We will identify where we are in the healing process as we move in the direction of transformation. Life is full of loss. Loss is here to teach us how deep our love truly is.

5Rhythms®: Lyrical Joyful Generosity

The state of being in Lyrical is a result of the Chaos dance. Resting in the aftermath of the chaos, we are delivered into the openness of Lyrical. This is purely a state of being. Here we are able to align with the nature of change, practicing the art of becoming an agile athlete of life. Lyrical brings us into the spirit of shape shifting so that we can rewrite our stories and recreate our reality and relationship to what is.

The Lyrical dance is connected to the state of joy in the heart. It challenges us to look at the our own capacity for joy and expand it. How much joy and happiness do you allow yourself? How much time do you spend cultivating happiness?

Through the movement and meditations we will work with the spirit of generosity and all the wisdom that it has to inform the hearts relationship to joyfulness. We will investigate the action of joy and its ability to open and transform us. Here we will ask the question: How much love are you able to give and receive? How generous are you with yourself and others? This is a path, a practice, a journey and place to be discovered through embodiment, meditation and group sharing.

5Rhythms®: Still Compassion

Stillness opens the door to the connection to self, partner, community and the divine unknown. The state of Stillness dissolves all rhythms into one. It is here that we touch into the great emptiness that unifies all aspects of life.

In the previous sessions of this series we will deeply investigate the emotions. The benefit of cultivating a relationship with our emotions is that it helps us expand our capacity to be with what is. By connecting with fear, courage, anger, forgiveness, sorrow and joy, we cultivate the ground to connect with the nature of compassion.

In this session, we arrive prepared to dive into the realm of compassion. We will cultivate the skills of self-compassion as well as compassion for all beings. Through these dances we able to recognize that we are not alone in what we have been through. We are connected to a world of people who have also danced these dances.

By doing the sacred work of healing ones own heart, we can then be of service to all beings in a clear and clean way. We become skillful at dancing through life with an agile and compassionate heart. We contain the ability to move with whatever emotions arise. In turn we are able to remain in more balance and equanimity as these emotions arise in ourselves and others. This is the dance of heart. This is the dance of life.

5Rhythms®: Emptiness Dancer

Dance until the dancer disappears and only the dance remains ~ Osho

At the core of Gabrielle Roth’s teachings, she believed that when we get out of our own way, the true dance is born. Our bodies are a vehicle for a great spirit to come through. The dancer is here to dance free of the ego and past, so that we can live fully in the moment. To dance is to address healing on all levels, body, mind, heat and spirit. In order for an integrated healing to take place all quadrants needs to be addressed. As we heal all that we have been through, we can begin to see the present moment with absolute clarity. In achieving this, we can begin to live fully, in passion and without fear.

All of the sessions in this series will lead to this moment, this one session. It is here that we will investigate and assess how much of our work has been done. We will mark where we are on the Path of The Wounded Healer. We will be asked to break the identification of any one place and see the trajectory of our healing journey. We will mark where we are and where we want to be in the stages of, victim, survivor, healer, transformation and service.

We will dance a Wave in the spirit of emptiness. We will sit in quiet introspection. We will share in small groups and also in the large group. There will be ample time for questions, answers and sharing as we complete this series.
