E﻿VENT INFORMATION****Y﻿OU MUST ORDER A FREE TICKET THROUGH EVENTBRITE TO ATTEND****Black Maternal Health Week is a week-long campaign founded by the <a href="https://blackmamasmatter.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Black Mamas Matter Alliance​</a> to build awareness, activism, and community-building​ to amplify ​the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people. According to BMMA, this year's theme is "Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy!"P﻿lease join the Howard University Women's Health Center of Excellence for our kickoff event for Black Maternal Health Week 2023. Lunch will be provided. O﻿ur kickoff event will feature:- Opening remarks from Dr. Hugh Mighty, Senior Vice President of Health Affairs - Remarks from Dr. Guoyang Luo, Director of the Women's Health Center of Excellence-﻿ A brief history of Black Maternal Health Week from Dr. Eve Boyle, Associate Director of Training and Engagement-﻿ A keynote address from Layo George, founder and CEO of <a href="https://www.wolomi.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wolomi</a>- An opportunity for mingling and connecting over lunch T﻿his event is open to all members of the Howard University community, DC residents, and community organizations dedicated to supporting the health and wellness of Black mothers. P﻿lease direct any questions you may have about this event to hucoe@howard.edu.****Y﻿OU MUST ORDER A FREE TICKET THROUGH EVENTBRITE TO ATTEND****A﻿BOUT LAYO GEORGELayo George is a nurse, healthcare administrator and an entrepreneur focusing on maternal health, equity and social determinants of health. Layo is the founder and CEO of Wolomi, a maternal health startup that supports a companion app that provides resources and guidance to improve the experiences and outcomes for women of color during their perinatal periods. She leads a team of culturally competent multidisciplinary subject matter experts to address the maternal health crisis. She has led the creation of groundbreaking products for Health IT, Marketing and Health Information Exchange companies. Before founding Wolomi, as a quality improvement specialist at the District of Columbia Primary Care Association, Layo led 15 healthcare centers through value-based practice transformation and oral health primary care integration. She also served on the District of Columbia Board of Nursing for over 3 years. She currently serves on the Board of Unity Healthcare, the largest federally qualified health center in the District of Columbia. Layo can be found supporting mothers on social media @wolomiapp.D﻿IRECTIONSP﻿ARKINGT﻿he closest parking lot is next to the Georgia Ave McDonald's, near the intersection of 8th St NW and Barry Place NW. The entrace for the parking lot is on 8th St NW between V St NW and Barry Pl NW. The fee for parking is $10.M﻿ETRORAILT﻿he closest metro stop is the Shaw-Howard University Station (Entrance/Exit at the intersection of 7th St NW and S St NW).METROBUST﻿he closest busroute is the 70 (North to Silver Spring/South to Archives). Traveling northbound, you can exit the bus at the Georgia Ave NW and Barry PL NW stop, which stops right in front of the Centers of Excellence lobby entrance. Traveling southbound, you can exit the bus at the Georgia Ave NW and Barry PL NW stop, and then cross the street to enter the Centers of Excellence lobby. SHUTTLE BUST﻿he North Campus Route of the Bison Shuttle Bus is available, with direct transportation from the Shaw-Howard University Station to the campus. The closest stop to the Centers of Excellence is the Bookstore at 2225 Georgia Ave NW. From those stop, you can cross Bryant Street and continue along Georgia Ave NW to the Centers of Excellence lobby (2301 Georgia Ave NW Unit D).
