Peggy Haine and the Lowdown Alligator Jass Band have been described as traditional in style of music, but their variety of approaches made it one of the most versatile bands of its type. Jelly Roll Morton and Bix Beiderbecke, Bessie Smith and Willie Dixon, Spike Jones and Fats Waller are some of the sources the Ithaca-based Alligators draw from. The band's pianist and arranger, Dan May, even added to the book a series of original pieces based on the poetry of Dorothy Parker, "Alligator Songs."Known for years as the “Red Hot Mama” of her band, Peggy Haine &amp; the Lowdown Alligator Jass Band performed around Ithaca and around the country. Peggy is known for her costumes in performance and her flamboyant performing ways, as well as for resurrecting songs and styles that many had thought disappeared.TCFA has been awarded a matching grant by the New York State Council of the Arts to renovate, restore, and improve accessibility to our instruction, performance, and exhibition space. To celebrate this opportunity, Peggy Haine and the Lowdown Alligator Jass Band will perform in a one-of-a-kind benefit concert filled with jazz and spectacle. All proceeds will go directly to the Capital Campaign Match.
