BANDS AND BIOS:
Afro-Pacific Collective [S]
Few people know about the rich Afro-Diasporic heritage of the Pacific and it is our desire to show a little bit of what we know. We will be performing Afro-Peruvian pieces: a lando, a festejo and a percussion piece for cajones arranged by Emilia Moscoso and Diana Teixeira.
Baltic Ensemble SKAN [F]
Faculty: Paul Berkolds
Traditional music from the Baltic region. Part-songs, call and response, and post-folk arrangements from Latvia, Lithuania and Finland.
Balkan Ensemble  [S]
Ensemble performing traditional and contemporary arrangements of music from the Balkans. Languages include Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, and Macedonian.

Brazilian Drumming Ensemble procession [S]
The CalArts Brazilian Drumming Ensemble is a student-led project that began two years ago out of the students’ interest in learning about Brazilian music, which is not offered as a regular class at CalArts. This ensemble is open to the institute and has performed previously in several events. The purpose of this ensemble is to explore carnival rhythms from Brazil including samba, batucada, and bloco afro, among others. The students meet on a weekly basis throughout the year and have become more than just an ensemble: now they are a community.  
CalArts Japanese Ensemble [S]
CalArts Japanese ensemble is a collaboration between three groups, CalArts Hinotani Daiko, Beginning Shakuhachi Ensemble, and CalArts Koto Ensemble. The group includes students, faculty, and alumni. The leaders of the groups are (respectively): Richard An and Wells Leng, Rachel Rudich, and Kozue Matsumoto.
CalArts Daf Ensemble [S]
CalArts Daf Ensemble is a student-run ensemble performing the regional rhythmic traditions of Iran, and original compositions by Misaq and Matin Eshaghi. The daf frame drum has been used for mystical Sufi and Darvish traditions and rites for a long time. In the past few decades, it has surpassed its original place in the Sufi’s “Khanqah” and has found its prestigious status as a versatile instrument in different musical endeavors. Today, this musical instrument is used in world music and percussion ensembles as well as in traditional Iranian music.
CalArts Salsa Band [F]

The CalArts Salsa Band is one of many performing groups featuring students and faculty at California Institute of the Arts. The band was started in 1991 by David Roitstein (CalArts Jazz Program Director), a pianist and composer from Miami. Every September, the group begins again with all new members, and all of the students write original arrangements or original compositions for the band. The co-director of the ensemble is Joey De Leon, master percussionist and drummer. The CalArts Salsa band frequently performs in Los Angeles and has an ongoing series of free concerts/ workshops for Los Angeles area high schools and cultural centers sponsored by the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP). Other concerts include the Los Angeles Music Center Plaza, Plaza de la Raza, Watts Towers Cultural Center, Universal CityWalk, the Conga Room, Universal Amphitheater, and the Greek Theater. The band has had original compositions on several of the annual CalArts Jazz CD projects, recorded at Capitol Records. CalArts Samulnori Ensemble [S]
Korean percussion music from the pungmul, samulnori, and shaman traditions, played on four percussion instruments: changgo, buk, jing, and kkwaenggwari. We will be performing two pieces: an arrangement of “Utdari Pungmul” we learned from visiting artists during winter session, and a new arrangement of shaman rhythms.
CalArts Student Afro-Cuban Ensemble [S]
The ensemble plays a variety of different folkloric styles of music from Cuba fused with contemporary styles of west African drumming and vocals as well as popular Cuban music. The foundation is Lukumi, but many genres are included, from Arará to Makuta.

Naiyandi Melam procession [S]
Naiyandi Melam ensemble will perform traditional South Indian processional music
Rain at Sunset: Balinese Gamelan and Friends [S]
Rain at Sunset is a work for Balinese Gamelan and western chamber orchestra written by CalArts MFA 2 Brandon Carson. The piece involves an ensemble of 18 CalArts students, combining Balinese Gamelan players with chamber music students playing western instruments (strings, woodwinds, western percussion). 
Sabina Arias [S]
Son jarocho fusion, live looping and neo-soul vibes.
Susana Pineda and The New Quartet [S]
Susana Pineda plays her original music and arrangements accompanied by her international band, The New Quartet. Her music blends the tropical rhythms and themes of South America with contemporary jazz, creating a new and exciting sound. 
Traditional Turkish Ensemble [S]
Traditional Turkish art music repertoire arranged and sung by Sü Ozcan, a combination of fundamental middle-eastern music with Ottoman and Mediterranean influences. 
Youssef Sadek Ensemble [S]
Traditional music from the Middle East in addition to original compositions by Youssef Sadek, combining middle-eastern music with jazz influences.
