LakerRail 2019 Railroad Photography Show and Night Photo Session

<H2>LakerRail Multimedia Show</H2>
“LakerRail” will held at the Union Depot in St. Paul on Saturday, June 1, 2019. LakerRail is similar to Winterail on the West Coast and Summerail in Ohio with an exhibition of railroad photos and videos set to music. This year’s program features the work of railfan photographers from across the United States. Presenting the shows at Union Depot allows viewers to enjoy the programs in a historic setting related to railroads.
LakerRail will run from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Red Cap Room at Union Depot. Programs will run 15 to 20 minutes each with hourly breaks. A one hour break will be held 4 to 5 p.m. The event will take place the same day as Union Depot Train Days, which features exhibits of railroad equipment, model railroads, and rail oriented vendors that will be held June 1 and 2. 
Tickets for LakerRail are $25, you may also combine your purchase with the Friday night photo session which is also $25 for a discounted price of $40 for both events.
<H2>Friday Night Photo Shoot</H2>
As part of Union Depot Train Days, a special night photo session will be held on Friday, May 31 beginning at 8 p.m. The photo session will be at Union Depot in St. Paul, and will feature Soo Line GP30 locomotive No. 700 and Soo Line caboose No. 1 from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minn.
Just added! The Friends of the 261 is bringing their newly acquired ex-Milwaukee Road E9A to Train Days. It is still in Wisconsin & Southern paint and will be included in our night shoot.
Also on hand will a Twin Cities & Western GP38-2 and other pieces of equipment. 
The night photo session will be conducted by photographer and Trains Magazine locomotive columnist Chris Guss and will use AlienBees flash lighting. Participants at the night photo session should plan to bring a tripod and a camera that has the ability for the shutter to remain open (cameras on phones will not be able to “catch” the flash but may work under existing lighting conditions).
Tickets for the photo shoot are $25. You may also purchase tickets to the LakerRail multimedia railroad photo program on June 1 at Union Depot, tickets for that event are also $25. If you purchase a ticket to both events the cost drops to $40.
<H2>LakerRail Programs </H2>
Here are the presenters and their programs for LakerRail 2019:
Modern Day “Omaha”/ Adams Cutoff – Alex Silka
Modern Day "Omaha”/ Adams Cutoff showcases Union Pacific’s lines within the state of Wisconsin. Photos from Butler to Adams to Wyeville on the “Adams Cutoff" and scenes on the former Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha from Wyeville to Altoona are included. Most of the program was shot before and at the beginning of the Wisconsin frac sand boom. With the boom of fracking in the oil and gas industry, this line quickly turned from a mostly dormant backwoods mainline into a vital part of Union Pacific's industrial sand network.
Alex Silka is Wisconsin native and current resident who has been active behind the camera since 2010. Alex has been employed by Union Pacific Railroad since 2013, and is a conductor on the lines radiating out of Altoona, Wis. In his free time Alex still finds time to do photography, hike, enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, and detail his cars. 
“Fat Bottom Girls” and “Bonga-Free Zone” – Matt Krause
“Fat Bottom Girls,” is a nickname in some circles given to freight locomotives with full-width carbodies, sometimes just simply called “cowls.” Originally the design was built for US railroads from 1967-1974, with the final batch of more modern cowls constructed post-1982 (which this show will focus on) only ordered by Canadian Railroads. Many of the remaining modern cowl units have migrated south into the states for service after Canadian Pacific and Canadian National purged their ranks of most of this type locomotive. This brief look shows examples of each model still in freight service, some still working for the original railroad, others for a regional railroad.   
Bonga-Free Zone – “Bonga,” is a somewhat recently developed slang term for a modern General Electric locomotive. This short show offers a quick sampling of shots where a “Bonga” is nowhere to be found. Starting off in the Upper Midwest, the show heads west before coming back to the region where Matt currently live
Born and raised in Sheboygan, Wis., Matt Krause has been a railfan ever since his Mom bought him a Tyco train set at the age of 5. Starting off with models, his hobby (some might say obsession), slowly morphed into photography once he got his driver’s license. He recently started dabbling in shooting video. Having bounced around Wisconsin after graduating from high school in 2005, he and his wife, Nikki, currently reside just outside of Tunnel City. With ample time away from work and a VERY understanding wife, he tries to get trackside as often as he can. 
Love on the Old Line – Bill Christopher 
Like many railfans, Bill Christopher thought Metra, Chicago’s commuter railroad, was boring and predictable (of course, these are good attributes when you just want to get home after a long day at work.) Then he started riding Metra Union Pacific North, the former Chicago & North Western Old Line, while courting his wife, Susanne. Looking out the window, he discovered big city scenes, stately depots, suburbs both affluent and desperate, forests, marshes and fields, all cloistered around a vital part of Chicago’s transportation network. So he got off the train a few times and took photos. Bill has been fascinated by railroading since 1969, when he started riding his bike to watch the Soo Line pass through his hometown of Mundelein, Ill. His first train ride was on the Old Line later that year. He expresses his love and profound gratitude to his wife Susanne, who has unflinchingly supported his obsession with railroading and established her place in his circle of friends. They live in Waukegan, Ill. 
Big O’s Best of the West – David P. Oroszi
David P. Oroszi has been photographing trains and railroads for over 50 years. This program highlights his favorite railroad photos from the West including scenes of the Rio Grande, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific and Union Pacific taken during the first five decades of his photographic career.
David P. Oroszi began photographing trains in 1967 and has literally covered most of the national railroad scene photographically. His highly regarded images have appeared in dozens of national railroad publications. He has also co-authored five books on railroad topics. He is the founder of the popular “Summerail” multi-media event held each August in Marion, Ohio. Dave and his wife Jill reside in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. 
Red Hawk Down – Dan Kwarciany
Ever wonder what the inside of a 100-ton hopper looks like? Red Hawk Down is a mix of video and photos showing scenes taken the last few years along fan favorite short lines such as Minnesota Commercial, Twin Cities & Western, and Progressive Rail. Also included are trips to the Iron Range of Minnesota and Upper Michigan, as well as scenes from Wyoming in the Powder River Basin where BNSF and UP continue to put on a show with long coal trains. 
Dan Kwarciany started watching Wisconsin Central trains at a young age in his hometown of Wausau, Wis. He obtained a degree in Business Management at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. He has resided in the Twin Cities since 2008.
50 Years of Railfanning – Mike Schafer
Mike Schafer, editor of Passenger Train Journal, The Milwaukee Railroader, and the Nickel Plate Road Magazine among others, provides a look back at 50 years of his railfan photography from 1964 to 2014 (he has taken another 5,000 photos since 2014!)
Growing up in Rockford, Ill., Mike Schafer has been photographing trains since was a teenager, is the author of several books on railroading subjects, and his written countless magazine articles. He travels extensively, particularly by passenger train.
My First 10 Years of Digital Photography, Clearing the Line on the Ontario Southland, and Chicago Terminal on Goose Island – Chris Guss
My First 10 Years of Digital Photography showcases the first decade when making images 24/7 in all weather conditions became much easier with digital photography and the amazing advances in sensor technology over the years. Segments include daylight photography, less than perfect weather, and images made after dark.
Clearing the Line on the Ontario Southland was made from two separate days of plowing in February 2015 as the railroad was contending with heavy drifting that winter. Typically using a pair of vintage F units rebuilt to GP38-2 specifications internally, OSR has become one of the favorite places for railfans to document snow plow operations in North America. Trackside, cab and aerial photos give a complete look at what it takes to keep the tracks clear during a Canadian Winter.
Chicago Terminal on Goose Island is a fun look at a piece of now-abandoned trackage on Chicago’s north side. This man-made island on the Chicago River was once dominated by Milwaukee Road operations decades ago, but was reduced to a single track in later years and used briefly for car storage before operations ceased in February 2018. Captured in August 2017, this was the second to last time Chicago Terminal would operate on Goose Island and the trip became essentially a photo freight for the railfans and crew during a rare afternoon run on the island.
Chris Guss grew up in the St. Louis area. After college graduation he worked in the railroad industry for Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and BNSF Railway before becoming a freelance writer and photographer. Among other projects, he’s a correspondent for Trains Magazine and writes the monthly Locomotive column for the magazine. Since 2000 he has called Chicago home.
Wide Open Spaces – Robert Stevens
 Robert’s program is a dramatic look at railroading along the “wide open spaces” of the United States and Canada including BNSF Railway, Canadian Pacific and short line and regional railroads. Views at sunrise and sunset, along the open prairies and in the vastness of the West highlight how the railroad is part of the transportation fabric of North America.
Minnesota native Robert Stevens acquired his interest in railroads growing up in the southern part of the North Star State. After college he pursued a railroad career and after a few years in operations moved into railroad management. He and his family reside in a Minneapolis suburb.
Railroads of the Southeast – Eric Hendrickson
Eric’s program highlights railroads of the Southeastern United States including CSX, Norfolk Southern, Florida East Coast and short lines. Sprinkled in his program are night photos and several shots from a drone to “elevate” viewer enthusiasm!
Eric Hendrickson is a native of La Crosse, Wis. and currently resides in Jacksonville, Fla. Eric began his career on the Soo Line/Canadian Pacific, then joined Amtrak and is currently employed by CSX Transportation.
Railroaders – Mike Yuhas
Yuhas salutes the railroaders who make the make the trains go, working on board the trains and along the right-of-way to keep railroads moving day and night. Included are views trackside and from drones. Mike will also present another “surprise” program.
Mike Yuhas is not only a well known railroad fan but also serves as Ad Sales Manager at Kalmbach Media's  Trains Magazine.
 45 Years of Iowa Railroading – Steve Glischinski
Iowa was once laced with railroads both large and small. After he received a “good” slide camera in 1972, Steve began making the trek south from his home state of Minnesota south to Iowa. His program looks at railroads in Iowa beginning in the 1970s to today. Railroads covered include “fallen flags” such as Burlington Northern, Chicago & North Western, Milwaukee Road, Rock Island, Santa Fe and short line and regional railroads including a favorite, Iowa Interstate.
Steve Glischinski is a native of St. Paul, Minn. He began taking railroad photo with a Kodak Instamatic camera in 1970. He has written eight books on railroading and is a correspondent for Trains Magazine. He resides in Shoreview, Minn.
